Germinating question for the experienced
Ok I am back and setting up for round 2!! The 1st go around I threw a few seeds in a big with a wet paper towel and put in a window, little did I know I would be doing more reading than in high school and be on the road for one of the best feelings of success I have ever felt!! So im hooked!
My question is about germinateing. I have read alot about cracking the seed and also throwing it is a cup of water for a day. How many people actually do this and are there any other techniques I should consider? I will grow in soil agean and I want to keep it simple, I do not plan on useing the jiffy pots or anything like that. I had no problems germinateing last time and honestly want to do it the same way. Can anyone offer any tips from EXPERIENCE or a creditable source. Basicly my question is "How do you germinate?"

I take a plate, put wet paper towels on it, put seeds down, cover the seeds with another wet paper towel. Then I take a 2nd plate and cover the top, kinda like making a clam. I have had 100% success, most germinate within 2 days, many...within 24 hours.

I agree with greenthumb although i use clingfilm to stop it from drying out as quickly. You want to keep them in a dark place, mid room temp. I use my bedside table draw ! I also have a 100 % success rate with this technique apart from a couple of bagseeds. You soak the seed in water when its not germinating (just being a bit stubborn). I wouldnt reccomend cracking though, sounds like you could easily damage the seed. Charbud

Put the seeds in a shot glass of distilled water and cover with another cup. Leave them there for a day. I then plant them in a solo cup using the same dirt mixture I will use the entire grow. Make sure you have holes cut in the bottom of the cup and water well. Cover the cup with a ziploc bag and secure it with a rubber band and place under your light. Remove ziploc bag once sprouted. Good luck.

I put all my seeds in water [tap] over night. Then put holes in bottom, fill with soil, water and put a whole in the dirt 1/2''. Then put seed in hole and cover, but this being cold, its important to keep the soil warm and they should pop in at least 3 days.
I like the plastic cover over the top, it would keep moisture in nice.
Glad ya got interested in the hobby bro, it just gets more interesting. And if your seeds popped with your first try, id stick with what works for you. I do like soaking the seed because it softens the outside and imo cracks faster. But if ya got cold temps, you might put them on your cable box or something that would keep them warm.
Good luck to ya:thumbsup:

I use a shot glass or right now, using the bottom cut off a 20 oz soda bottle with a little water. I put the seeds in it, cover it with a coffee cup, wait a couple days. I then find they've started to pop, I take them from the water with a spoon, grasp with a pair of tweezers with the root tip down, put in a hole, cover, water a little, and let 'er rip!!!. They break the surface in two to three days. Works every time on viable seeds. :D
