Video-Growing marijuana: the harvest

Deep in Mendecino County, California, at the end of a long dirt track lies a 70-acre farm with wooden outbuildings common to this agricultural area. Only the notice on the front gate marks this place out as different: Warning - medical marijuana facility.

The sign is there for federal law enforcement officers who may decide to raid the farm at any time, as they have already done at the growing collective's other sites.

Since 1996, marijuana has been legal to grow, distribute and consume in California for medical purposes, but it remains illegal under federal law.

â??They flew low over our other farm last week," said the grower who runs this group of farms and does not want to be identified, "so we've harvested all the plants from there and now we're working flat out to trim and dry them.â?�

The farm is full with 15 to 20 'trimmers' - usually young and sporting an assortment of piercings and tattoos - many of them return every season to the same farms where they can earn $150 a day preparing the marijuana plants for sale in California dispensaries.

California will be voting on November 2 whether to approve Proposition 19, which would legalise the drug for personal recreational use in the US state.
