how much light is needed ?

my friend is doing a grow this winter in his closet, he is trying to use minimal ligh and power because the *power ranger* as he calls it comes and checkes the meter from time to time and he cant afford to get nailed with even a small grow.. i was told he will be growing an auto flower dwarf called AK 47 im sure i dont need to go in detail about what that is so moving on.. long story short he wants to grow 2 of these at a time and plans on getting over 20 grams per plant just for personal use.. his question is how much light is needed to grow just 2 AK 47 dwarf plants in a small space and how much will this drive the power bill up per month on average ?

i fully trust anything said on this forum always and any information will be greatly apreciated because both my friend and i are sick of buying china mids and over priced kush ! not to mention they could all be sprayed with other crap that we dont even know about to add weight and addictiveness:(

For that small of a grow, and looking for stealth, (Specially on the power meeter.) I'd go with LED. Our high quality hydroponic LED grow light products | Ecogroled 50 or 90w LED should suffice. I've got a 120w over a ruffly 5x5 area and it's over 3 feet away from the plants, and could suffer being a bit farther back (Need to lower my table some) since my plants simply arent stretching. Node spacing under my 400w MH was about 3/4" under the LED its more like 1/4" Freakin CRUSHING light! :cool: :thumbsup: :jointsmile:


Spensive too! ;) On the cheap, get a 3-4 bulb bathroom light fixture like above the mirror, hang that over the grow, screw 3 "Y" splitters into each socket and use 27w CFL's (104w per socket) So it'll be 3-4x the power cost, but about 1/4 the cost for the light. Your choice. :stoned:

so if i read that right the 50 watt ufo light will cover the whole grow from start to finish ? if this is true you just saved us easily over $150, perfect man my friend sais thanks alot for the quick reply and in return he will make a grow log of the whole process with pics..

still have 1 more question.. winter here in canada is extremely cold and he dont run much heat through his house, will the light be enough to bring temp up to where it's suppose to be at ? or will he have to heat the room ?

i have grown outdoors only with success and to me it is real simple.. with indoor growing i know nothing ! only bits of what i read evry now and then and i love a challenge especially when someone told me in these exact words "ya pfff, sure you can grow it... but you wont get any bud" see that just makes me want to proove him wrong and smoke him a joint of the bud i grew... then when he sais holy shit im baked, where did you get that weed >? i can tell him with a smile on my face :)

The LED throws next to no heat I can literally touch the glass with no discomfort, it's maybe "Luke warm",... so he's gonna want some kind of heater in there. It lowered the daytime temps in my room by 6*

ok i checked that out and from what i can tell it is not for beginners.. i found a stealth pc box with evrything included but again i am a noob in this department so my noob question is will this pc box work as well in budding stages as it do in veg ? sorry for the noob question but i am learning :) i would rather hydroponics than soil because i think it would pull a fatter yeild.. just want a whole set up ready to go fans, pots, grow box/tent, you know plus they give you nutrients and even ways to increase yeilds !

also the strain he plans to use states it is 100 % autoflower ? do this mean we can grow the whole plant from seed to bud under 24 hour light ?

I've never messed with autoflower strains, so I couldn't tell ya about the light cycle.

If you're trying to avoid an infrared signature or noticeable power spike, I'd suggest using fluourescent grow lights. If your grow space is relatively airtight, fluourescent can take a slight edge off of any really chilly space.

However, if you need add'l heating from your grow lighting, just spring for a 400 - 600 watt high pressure sodium lamp...you'll get better yield from the veg stage, and possibly not have to run any heaters during the winter.

Your auto's do best at 20 hours on and 4 off. Some folk even leave lights on 24 hours. :thumbsup:

I personally find the auto's do best with a bit of sleep time tho. :hippy:

One of the best discussions of how much light is needed for small, stealthy closet grows I've read is in this thread. See especially post #16, which details exactly how much bud came from different lighting levels. The bottom line is that 40 grams is very do-able with cheapo cfl's...he got 68.8 grams from 3 68w cfls, which locally to me cost about $15 each.

The bonus is that cfl's throw off considerable heat, and even in Canada that setup may provide enough that your friend* won't need additional heating.

Calculating the monthly electricity cost is easy. 3x68w is 204 watts. That means it's consumes a kilowatt every 5 hours. During veg where the lights are on 24/7, that's about 5 kilowatt-hours (kwh) per day, or 150 kwh per month. Multiply monthly kwh per your electric charge per kwh, and you have your bill. (At 15 cents per kwh, that would be about $22/month.)

During 12/12 flowering, the same lighting setup would consume about half that. 12x30x.204 = 73.4 kwh; or at 15 cents/kwh, about $11/month.

Adjust accordingly if your friend uses a different lighting schedule or if electricity costs more or less than 15 cents per kwh.
