Will a250w hps light do harm?

In a 2x4x6 area and a 250 w hps hung 5.5 ft high, will the room get to hot? And how many plants would work, (4 forced flowered at a foot to much?)

you will need to raise and lower the light. Dont fix it to the ceiling: instead mount hooks and find something like a chain that can be adjusted as needed. The lights should be 18" from the tops at all times. 250 watts is perfect for the space. I would put no more then 1 plant wide. Dont get greedy. I'd say 4 plants lengthwise will be fine. This will allow plenty of room for them to spread out, which they will and not interfere with one another. If you find that you need more plants, you could stagger them slightly and maybe get 1 or 2 more in. I would not stack them linearly like 2 wide and 4 depth like a formation or something. I dont think you have enough space for that. You will be tempted to cram in lots of plants, but really, 4 will be all you need.

It will get hot too hot for the plants unless you have ac registers in the closet as well. The solution is to cut a hole into the ceiling of the closet and install some sort of duct which is either connected to the ac or to a fan to suck out the heat. If you haven't bought the 250hps consider some of the other light options like the large CFL's they started making a few years ago. Home Depot caries a line of 100 watt cfl's (not 100watt equivalent but 100 watt input) for like 17 dollars. 3 of those would put out more light then the hps would and be far less hot. So much less hot that you might be able to just install fans into the closet and not have to cut holes into the ceiling for ventilation. I haven't seen the ballast but I cant imagine it's all that expensive if they are selling the bulb for 17 bucks.

already have the 250w hps, but it did not seem to get all that hot. would it help to keep the door cracked a little whenever the light is on, and have a fan directing th air outward? I do not want to damage the walls by cutting them or anything of that sort. what about two plants, 3 ft tall, tied down so they are horizontal?

would having the door open all the way?...be a problem with lights on?...no way around it...the heats gotta go somewhere.

400 watt HPS...in a 2x4x8 closet..in a cool (77 degree) room...:pimp:...always 77

probably, too hot....there HAS to be cool air in...hot air out...period.

Temps need to stay under ..85 degrees...IMO

turn the light on...put a digital thermometer in there... shut the door...record max temp...after 24 hours

My space is a little bigger than yours, but I am running a 250hps in a closet, so we're close....with my fans off and door shut, the temp can hit 100 quick. I have an intake and exhaust and still have to crack the door to keep it at 88. Cracked door is not my idea of discretion, so I am still looking at ways to cool it down. Right now, I am trying to track down a Pyrex Bake a Round to rig up a cool tube. You might consider that as well. I am also considering springing for one of these: Sun Systems - - Sun Shield- Cool Sun 6"

I'm a total newbie, but I thought I'd chime in since it seems we are in similar predicaments. Long story short, it's gonna be hot. Work it out before you get your plants, or it gets to be a real pain in the a$$. Good luck to ya.
