SCROG grow

I was wondering if doing a SCROG grow. Would I be able to use a 250 watt HPS light to flower a 4x2 screen? Could I use a 150w HPS and four 48" fluoro tubes? I already have the fluorescent lighting over 6 new transplants and some clones that are rooting, and was wondering if I could utilize these?

Footprint of a 250w is about 2x2, 400w is 3x3, 600w is 4x4, 1000w is 5x5 (depends on the reflector you're using for these, but thereabouts)

You could mount a 250w in the middle and use some CFL's on the sides :twocents:

Thanks for the response. I am not sure how large of a SCROG grow I am going to try, as I do not know what kind of yield I can get from this size screen. Basically, I am just reading a lot and hoping I do it right.

I'm on my first grow and let my ladies get too big before flowering. They have almost doubled in size since I started flowering 2 weeks ago. I've been having to tie them down and have used a SOG type of shape. I've seen a HUGE difference in the number of buds on all 4 of my ladies since I started bending and tying. I'm not sure if I should use SCROG or not. I like the fact that you are providing lots of support for your ladies, but I understand that you give up a LOT of bud from the lower nodes. I know there are several schools of thought on this. Curious as to what yours is?

P.S. I am running 289watts of fluoro(tubes and cfl) in a 2x4' closet. Any idea out there if I have enough or if it is overkill? I plan on at least six plants for my next grow. :smokin:

289 watts of fluoro might be ok. how many lumens are you using, and what type of fluoro tubes do you have (t5, t8, t12)? It's more about usable lumens. If you can get the fluoros close to the plants, then you should be cool. However, I think HPS is the only way to get really dense fat nugs. But I am a newbie, so I am not 100% on that.

I have not tried the scrog grow yet, but I believe the point of the scrog setup is to actually increase overall yield. However, this is done by losing a lot of the "lower growth" in pruning. By doing this, apparently the buds that are above the screen get really large as the bare undergrowth is not sucking energy away from them, and the light is distributed evenly among all of the buds that are above the screen. I've heard this referred to as a "filed" of large buds (as large as the light you have would make the top colas of non SCROG plants), as opposed to a "forest" (which is what the sea of green is supposedly like.

I am just wondering how "tall" (if they were vertical as opposed to horizontal) my plants will have to grow to cover the screen and make that "field"?

Anyway, I know this wasn't a direct answer. But I figured that since neither of us had actually done this yet we could just bounce our understandings of the process off one another. Good luck with your grow.

There are a couple pics, as an attachment, I pulled off the net. I have to state that THIS IS NOT MY GROW (so no one can say I stole their pic). However, it is exactly what I want to do.

The yield really depends on how much light you are using, and how well spread out that light is over the screen area. I'd aim for 5000-7000 lumens per square foot as long as the temps are in range.

Check out my last two grow logs in my sig, they both have examples of Scrogs.

In short, you want to train your plants with LST from a young age. Topping can also help, but I don't like using it as it increases recovery time (and total veg time). I put my screen as low as I can while still being able to water the soil. Once the plants reach that level, put the screen on, and every few days pull the growth shoots under the screen and out towards the edges of the screen. Sometimes I'll use twist ties to pull a node up to the screen so that more of the branch is pressed against the screen, and all the nodes above the twist tie get more light.

With my Trainwreck, I filled up the screen about 60-70% before flipping to 12/12. With a sativa dominant strain, you might only need to fill in 30-40%. After flipping, continue pulling the shoots under and out to fill the screen. Once the screen is filled (or the plants stop stretching), let them grow up and through. I'll snip the tiny little bud sites below the screen, and if there are a lot of leaves laying on top of one another, I'd cut them too to prevent mold.

15" x 20" screen (about 95% filled) with one plant, using 400w hps = 101 grams dried (third grow)

Did a little better with two plants (second grow) and a larger screen, but messed up on the nutes and lost probably 20-30% yield. Keep in mind also that the TW is not a high yielder.

Thanks! That info will really help me out when I start this scrog process. I have a couple GDP and Bubblebery transplants that will probably work perfectly for this method. they mature at about the same rate and they LOVE to branch out, but will not go crazy like my other sativa dominant clone.

Hopefully I will have my new HPS light in a couple weeks, which will be the perfect time to start the scrog
