Cooling the rez. temp

Another silly question, I think: With a small (5 gal) rez. it seems silly to spend big bucks on a water chiller. Only really seem to 'need' it when the temps outdoors get near 90, since everyone in the area turns on the AC and power becomes unstable.

The question becomes: is it OK, or even worth it, to fill a clean plastic bag (sealable) with ice cubes and place it in the rez. to help lower temp a few degrees? Looking for a drop of maybe 9 degrees or so.

I keep 8 frozen water bottles in rotation right now.
Before i froze them, i poured out a little water to allow for expansion.
I keep this many so I never have to wait for one of them to fully freeze, just take the thawed bottle out of the res and pop in the freezer, grab a frozen one out and put it in the res.

Water chillers are quite a pain. I prefer to stick a peltier cooler to the side of the reservoir, give it power, and let a fan blow over it to dissipate the heat buildup.

Certainly less costly than a water chiller. Simpler, too.

I do the same thing, have done for a while now. Works perfect:thumbsup:

yeah, on the right track for cool run'ns.

i put frozen blocks of pH treated water, ( gal. +/- ) into my soup-pa-tanka
(55) res. when it gets above 78*F. This drops the temps back down to

Hi all,
khyberkitsune a quick question, as the little peltier cooler are about $5.00 to $10.00 or so each from ebay, how many would you need for a 55 gallon reservoir?
What would be the correct wattage? I find wattage between 91.2 and 250. There seem to be a lot of choices for me to screw up on, so as not to irritate the wife I'd like to get it right the first time.
I have looked and can't really find an answer to this and don't want to have to experiment too much.

BTW, I'm running a 55 gallon ebb and grow.
