I'll try, As soon as I get my set up finished. All I need now are my lights. Gonna use a CFL box but dunno what light I should buy maybe 4 26 watts would work. But what finish am I looking for warm white?
... as long as we're talking about Compact Flourescents, and not the Canadian Football League...
buzzhighstoned, what is the size of your 'garden' area, and how many plantlets were you thinking of raising in it? From seed, or clones?
As for getting it started, I personally believe that CFLs are the cat's ass. You should be able to run seedlings/small clones under one or two CFLs, and then increase the number as they get bigger.
For the initial 'Veg' (vegetative/growth) stage, you want either 'Bright White' (6400k-6500k), or 'Cool White' (4100k), which will help the plants grow without stretching. My fave for a single bulb is @ W4llM4rt, where 15bux gets me a 45w actual (200w equivalent) 4100k cool white 'shop bulb'... that puts out 3000 lumens :)
If you're going to do the whole thing with Fl/CFL lighting, then when it comes time to flower, switch / add as many 2700k 'Warm White' in there as you can (the redder light is better for simulating 'fall' lighting).
Or, if budget permits, add a single 250w/400w/600w HPS bulb into the garden for flowertime. As it is, I'm kinda working on a CFL experiment, where I've taken four plants out of my main garden (under 600w HPS), and am moving them to a secondary garden, exclusively under 388w of CFLs, totalling 24,800 lumens. The actual lumens/sq.ft ratio should be the same, though, and so we'll see how well they react. I'm hoping that they don't hate the new digs, as it should be quite a lot cooler in there, and the light(s) closer. I'm currently using 4x45w 4100k, 4x26w 6500k, and 4x26w 2700k, though I might change out all the 6500k ones for 2700k in a bit.

For now I only wanted to start two maybe four plants plants, They will be started as seedlings. two of them will be outside just experimenting, but as for now I have yet to germinate. I've really been doing research and planning. I have a little closet it's like a portable one with shelves that are removable, which is where the indoor plants will be. I have taken the shelves off and filled with tin foil. The only problem I have right now is the ventilation although I could drill holes into the small closet thing, would that be a good idea for vent; holes from one side would be being blown into via fan, and the other ones on the other side of the box looking closet thing will be to let air out. The closet is actually about 5 feet so I wanted to get the plants to maybe 3 or 4 before flowering. I will try to get a picture of the indoor growing space as soon as I can. A suggestion: buy one of the 200w equiv/45w actual 4100k 'cool white' shop lights to start. If you want, spend the extra coupla / few bux for the non-smashy version. If you're on a truly tight budget, get the cheaper one, and be careful.
Then, a little while later, add another one, putting the both o' them on one of those y-splitter thingies you'll probably have to get at the hardware store. Then, a little while later, add a six-pack of the 6500k 100w equiv / 23w actual... Then... either six or twelve of the 2700k 100w equiv / 23w actual, to finish. I leave the logistics of this up to your imagination.
Total bulb cost, start to finish: 15+15+20+20=70, or 20+20+20+40=100 bux.
Total lumens (in various spectræ) 3000+3000+9600+9600=25,200, or 3000+3000+9600+19200=38,400.
Theoretically enough to do 2.5 sq ft, or almost 4 sq ft. Ymmv. I'm testing it out right now mesef...
