Chloramine removal... Are aquarium products safe?

So, I searched but it looks like nobody ever resolved this.

I think my city uses Chloramine instead of Chlorine for disinfection, so it won't evaporate with 24 hours in the bucket.

Can I use these aquarium products to remove the chloramine? The one that I have also removes Chloramine. It's safe for fish so I'm assuming it's OK but I'd like some reassurance. It also says it contains bacteria for establishing the filter film, which could also be a good thing. I really don't want to kill any of the bacteria in my soil with chlorine/chloramine as I'm growing organically and I need them!!

I asked a similar question about letting my water sit out to let the chlorine evaporate... I was told not to do so since my city also uses chloramine. I was told it is beneficial to the plants because it can help prevent fungus/mold.

You also shouldn't let your water sit uncovered unless you use an airstone to keep it rich with oxygen.

I don't understand what you're getting at?

Chloramine apparently isn't volatile like chlorine, meaning it won't evaporate out of the water as easily. So, letting your water sit doesn't work for chloramine... you need to filter it or remove it with chemicals.

Chloramine is used as a disinfectant, so while it may be helpful to your plant by killing fungus and such, it also kills the beneficial bacteria that help your plant. So, I would rather get rid of it.

So what I'm wondering is whether or not the aquarium products you can get to remove chlorine are safe to use with plants or not? Does anyone use these or know?

Here are the ingredients:

-Sodium hydroxymethane sulfinate
-chelating compounds
-polyvinyl pyrollidones
-seaweed bipolymers
-organic hydrocolloids

The product is AquaSafe made by Tetra Aqua, it claims to:

-Neutralize chlorine, chloramine, and heavy metals
-Enhance natural, protective slime coating of fish
-Works in seconds

So, I don't know how this could really be harmful. There wouldn't be any salts from what I can gather... Any thoughts?

I would (and did) get a small boy water filter, or something similar. In general, I have been advised fish and plant products don't always play nice nice..

So for about $120, you can have all the chloramine, and chlorine filtered out while keeping the valuable trace mineral that most tap water has. In most cases these minerals are GOOD for our plants.

These little filters are also rated for 60,000 before replacement filters are needed. SO if you use less than 10 gal per day (10 gal 365), it will last a full year.

Not bad tasting either.

try vitamin c tabs to nutralize it all and give plants a booost they will love look it up, plants need vit c its da stufff you need man!

I'd love to get one of those but I just can't afford it right now! I had to quit my job to stay in Colorado, so I'm only buying what I HAVE TO HAVE. I still have a few things on the list before that (a better fan, pH meter, etc)...

Can you steer me towards any discussions or info on this subject at all?

I'm going to either have to use these chemicals OR just water with chloramines in the water!! I don't know which one would be worse!

Whoa! Thank you for the suggestion! I did a scroogle search and saw a bunch of stuff came up for it... I'm definitely going to look into it... sounds like a WIN-WIN. This sounds like a perfect solution for my needs...

Do you know anything about this? Can you overdo it? Any buildup?

Doing some research I found a dosage of 1000mg/75gal, which would be 13-14mg/gal. Sound right?
