Help specifications of transplant please !!!!

Sorry about these FAQ but i am dizzy from reading for the past week and finally decided to join a site and ask. I was wondering is it best to start my sproutlings in 16oz dixie cups with some seed starter made by miracle grow. I know this is a fierce subject and I am a total amatuer first timer (term gained from my previous internet exploits). I don't care about the perfect soils I just want it to grow this time. I'll advance my techniques with soil brands as I gain experience. Then after a week to two weeks transplant from the seed starter in 16 oz cups to a mixure of three-quarters 3 month time release miracle grow potting soil and one-quarter perlite in 5 gallon pots. My question here is regarding the time to switch from the 16 oz cups with the seed MG starter soil to the 5 gallon pots of the other potting soil mixture. I heard not to expose the plantlings while they were too young to the stronger fertilized soil. I also read not to transplant them to 2 different soils because they stop growing and react badly to the new environment. I also read not to keep them in the 16oz cups long cause the roots would outgrow the space. I am confused and tired of reading. Please help me. Thanks....

I would wait more like 3-4 weeks. It usually takes longer than that to get rootbound in my experience, and a little extra time will allow the roots to form all throughout the cups so transplanting is easier (doesn't break up).

I know many people use dixie cups to get the seedlings started however when i attempted my first grow i notices that the dixie cups were molding. I am not sure what is was caused to exactly but i decided to just steer clear of them:thumbsup:

I used solo cups that you would use for beer pong

So it is reccomended to keep the seedlings in the cups for three to four weeks? Also, that is the amount of time I am supposed to keep them in the seedling soil? I read it caused trama to the seedlings to transplant them into a new type of different soil. The MG seedling soil has much less nutrients obviously then the MG 3 month time release self feeding soil. I would actually prefer to use the beer pong cups cause I already have a healthy stock from a recent visit to Sams club. I just thought the dixie cups were bigger. I can see how the material of the red cups would stand up better to the water. Also, I can get some of those quart containers made for plants if that would be more healthy. look at my DIG round II if you wanna see what a MJ seedling will don in STRAIGHT miracle grow moisture control will do. i put them in there at somewhere near 3 days and they kinda hesitated then exploded.. so i dont think that you will have any problems.. and transplant WHEN they are root-bound not on a pre determined time frame.. it will work out better that way i would imagine
and if you have any questions just ask i will be willing to answer as the only dumb question is the one unasked... or something like that

Thanks so much MG. I'm a fellow east coaster. How will I know when they are root bound. Also, I'm guessing I shouldn't get a negative effect from switching from the miracle gro seed starter to the miracle gro 3 month time release soil. Learning on the fly isn't always best as the babies should be taken from the papertowel to the soil this evening. Also, from our area is it dumb for a freind to order from attitude in UK using discrete packinging. Thanks so much to all for help.

mainegrown has it right. Don't worry about transplanting to a different soil, it's gotta be done eventually.

You can see if they are rootbound by taking them out of the cup, or checking to see if the roots are growing out of the drainage holes on the bottom of your container, there's good instructions here: http://boards.cannabis.com/basic-gro...ency-baby.html

I personally transplant 4 times, makes for a nicer root mass when you let the roots bunch up a few times. I make the last transplant a week or two into flowering. It also helps to keep the soil's ph levels stable, as they tend to drop after a while in peat based soils such as MG.

Great advise my man:thumbsup:My experience is with bonsai trees, so i transplant all the time, but people dont want to with there weed. I re pot at least 4x when i grow outside. I get a good canopy and when there is no room for roots i re pot. After im out of pots, they then go in the ground for the year:thumbsup: its worked for me so far.
