SEATTLE -- He hasn't even taken office yet, but the words of Mayor-Elect Mike McGinn have already perked some citizens' ears.

McGinn believes pot should not only be legal, but also taxed.

"We recognize that, you know, like alcohol, it's something that should be regulated, not treated as a criminal activity. And I think that's where the citizens of Seattle want us to go," said McGinn on a public radio show on Friday.

McGinn asked for the public's help identifying the issues he should tackle as mayor. Topping the list was light rail expansion. The second slot went to legalizing pot.

Now McGinn, as well as state leaders, are talking about it.

McGinn says the drug should be legalized and also taxed to offset some of the city's financial problems.

"I think if every elected official who ever smoked marijuana voted to legalize it, it'd probably be legalized in an instant," he said.

And the state could be one step closer to legalizing marijuana. State Rep. Mary Lou Dickerson, D-Seattle, is sponsoring a bill that would do just that.

"Prohibition didn't work for alcohol, and it's not working for marijuana," she said.

Dickerson says the state's ineffective policies on marijuana are costing taxpayers money. She recognizes there will be opponents to her idea. But she thinks many people, including the mayor, are ready for change.

"I say, 'Good for him.' He's using common sense and we need more common sense when it comes to marijuana laws," she said.

McGinn declined KOMO News' request for an interview.

Under the state bill, marijuana would be sold in state liquor stores, and the drug tax would be used for drug and alcohol abuse prevention.

The legislative session starts on Jan. 11.

Have you really analized the reality of legalizing cannabis under state law and only allowing others to procure our meds? For 1 the federal government won't allow this to occur, heres why.

Under the plan, our state licenses farm growers to produce large amounts of cannabis on property with a title that can be forfieted under the regime. and you can bet your sweet fanny they will take it all. so this leaves no pot in any liquor store for anyone.

We all learned or should have from RCW 69.51 et seq what happens..the feds come in and tell the state, shut it down or loose it.

This legislation is just the same as the 1937 federal cannabis tax act, only they enforce it at the states rights level pulling the entire wool over our eyes. What can we the people do to stop it after it happens? not a damn thing, hell we voted for it !!!! SUCKERS !!:wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf:

At least some other elected official is more on the ball then the AG!!! :D And knows more about the MMJ Law it appears! :smokin:

You seem to forget, intra and inter as the prefixes to state commerce. What is grown and sold within the state is none of the feds business. :thumbsup:

I was just posting it from the angle that its nice to see some officials are taking this seriously and it will help to have an open debate about it.
I too am totally against the state selling MJ as I am against them selling liqour. No government agency should ever be in the retail business. Thats not for them to do.

I just finished reading some of the comments made on the KOMO News page about this. What I read by some just proves that we are becoming a dumber and more ignorant culture. Must be FOX NEWS that's doing it because reasonable people don't make comments about mj as some of these morons have. :jointsmile:

The problem is so many people would like to have it legalized but they don't bother to read the fine print. And if the government writes the bill there's tons of fine print.
Its the same way there trying to get universal healthcare. I'd love to have healthcare but I'm not willing to butcher the constitution to do it.

At the same time they're discussing the idea to ONLY sell MJ in STATE RUN liquor stores.... They're also discussing a bill to PRIVATIZE ALL liquor stores and get the state out a business in which is doesn't belong...

Furthermore.... State and Federal Taxes represent exactly 50% of EVERY bottle of liquor sold... This is in ADDITION to SALES TAX.... Think and research before jumping on the bandwaggon.... It's GREAT that we're talking about these things, but don't be fooled into giving up the rights that we've worked so hard for as Medical Paitents....

Tim Sheldon has been trying that for years. But the rest of the legislature just loves the taxes and profits made off of state run liquor stores too much.
