AMA Calls for Feds to Review Marijuana Restrictions

The American Medical Association on Tuesday adopted a resolution calling for the government to review its classification of marijuana, in order to ease the way for more research into the use of medical marijuana.

While the AMA, the largest physician's organization in the U.S., explicitly states it does not endorse any current state-based medical marijuana programs or the legalization of marijuana, the move is a significant shift that continues a trend toward support for easing restrictions against the drug.

"Our American Medical Association (AMA) urges that marijuana's status as a federal Schedule I controlled substance be reviewed with the goal of facilitating the conduct of clinical research and development of cannabinoid-based medicines," the AMA's statement (PDF) reads. "This should not be viewed as an endorsement of state-based medical cannabis programs, the legalization of marijuana, or that scientific evidence on the therapeutic use of cannabis meets the current standards for a prescription drug product."

Marijuana is currently classified by the federal government as a "Schedule I" controlled substance, the most restrictive of five categories. Schedule I substances are considered to have a high potential for abuse, no accepted medical use and a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug. Other drugs in that category include heroin, LSD and PCP. Less restrictive "Schedule II" substances include cocaine and methamphetamine.

oh, yeah, I'm sure your right. lots of vested interest in keeping the status quo, as f'd up as it may be. :wtf:

a law based on a lie is no law at all. however can still be rigidly enforced. if mmj is reclassified they wont be able to prosecute dispensaries any longer and prrison stocks will go down. what a shame our nations richest pukes will lose some money.

i believe marinol (aka synthetic THC) is only schedule II. and how the fuck are the feds gonna say it has no medicinal value when 14 states have MMJ not to mention Cali is trying to leagalize it for sale to individuals over 21?!

the deputy director of the DEA has the final say on all drug schedules, even though they swear that they only enforce the laws. what a joke!

cocaine is only schedule II as a topical antistetic and amphetamines because they use it for ADD. for christ sake's oxycontin is a schedule II. there is some other drug that's schedule II that's something like 50x more potent than morphine that is schedule II (i've got the name at home, i'll post it later).

thanks, shake. I gotta be honest, I wasn't really sure who had the final say, it is all sort of a twilight zone of bs. neither of the two branches want to take the responsibility (blame ;) ) for drug schedules. :wtf: it is indeed, a joke! :mad:

i know it! the only reason i know is that i was doing some research. it turns out that anyone can petition the DEA to have a drug rescheduled. there is one out there that is still open. but it wouldn't hurt for me to send one to them either!
