Question- Experience

I recently recieved a plant from a friend that was in kind of shabby condition. Medium is rockwool. The goal is to save the strain as it is very nice and the last of its kind. It was forming small dark dots on the leaves which would eventually turn orange, then die. I thought it was a pH problem so i flushed it. This seems to have stopped the progression of the spottage, but the leaves are about the same color as new growth. I noticed the rockwool was pretty packed and the 3 gal. pot its in remains heavy after a few days. If the medium is too tight, and restricting growth, would it be better to cut off clones now while the leaves are still mostly green, or should i let it ride?
