1st timer - Time frame advice
Hi All,
I'm eargerly awaiting the arrival of a 5 seed sativa mix from the greenhouse seed co, and intend to grow 2 at a time outdoors starting with the strawberry haze and arjans haze 1. I've been advised to pot the plants by september but have had conflicting views on how long it should take till harvest due to different strains / enviroments some saying before winter and others 12 - 16 weeks. could anyone give me an indication of how long i should expect ?
Thanks

if I dont know the specific strain it's no way I could tell you and even then you might as well go with what the people that sent you say.. they'd know best most likely. Also I dont know what the weather is like in Australia.. do you guys have an all year round season or what??

Thanks for your reply
I think the strains stem from super silver haze. September is the start of spring here with it averaging 25 * and 12 hrs daylight, summer is from dec - mar averaging 30* and 14hrs dropping of to 12 - 10hrs april - july.
Is it always the case that flowering starts once daylight is reduced which in this case would be april ?
Thanks again.

Each strain has what you would call a "critical photoperiod" which means a certain amount of uninterrupted darkness will trigger flowering. Some strains may be triggered by 10 hours of darkness, some may be triggered by 8. Most of us indoor guys use 12 because very few strains will require a longer dark period. If you are growing from GH seeds, their site has a ton of information about each of their strains.
Consult an almanac, and try to find out when and how the photoperiod in your area will adjust, and try to plant accordingly. Happy growing:thumbsup:

As a rough guide to the southern half of the continent...
Starting in September will give you absolutely huge plants... I'm at around 35'S latitude and usually leave germinating sativas until late October, early November. Most strains will begin to flower somewhere between the end of January and February and finish from late April to mid May.
If you're far north in NSW or southern QLD you will have a larger finishing window (ie you can keep plants in the ground longer) thanks to the milder weather conditions.
A word on frosts... A frost, on its own, wont damage your plants, so long as the days that follow are fine. Problems occur when freezing temperatures are accompanied by lousy weather.

Thanks for your help, i planted the seeds today (Arjans haze #1, Hawain snow). When you say big plants should this reflect on the yield also ?

You'd expect so, but there are down sides to large plants. If you have a private bush paddock, or such like, and can plant in the ground then large plants aren't a problem.
If they are in the backyard or confined in pots then they are just headaches. You wont have a haze strain mature in natural light before next May and that's a long time to have plants hanging around.
