What creature would do this....?

I have 2 plants outdoors within a chicken wire enclosure. A few days ago I noticed what looked like a poor pruning job to the bottom of both plants. 5 or 6 of the lower branches had been cut off, but left in the container....uneaten! I placed a large rat trap in the container and left it alone. This morning....the trap is unaffected....the plant is COMPLETELY stripped....all branches, top to bottom, are sitting in the container! Anyone experienced this outdoors? Raccoon, rat, possum, deer, bird? Needless to say, I have a 4 foot branchless stalk...and a unknown creature in my yard!
