1st timer needs help with setup ect.

Hey guys, I am a new grower, and I have looked around and read a lot about growing ect. and figured I would take the easy way out....doing as little as possible. I got a batch of weed with a lot of seeds, and i saved them thinking that one day I would try to grow my own (mostly out of curiosity.) BEFORE you decide to call me an idiot or anything, i am just looking to get a plant that grows that i will be able to harvest. I dont really care if it isnt the most amazing bud ever, as long as i can smoke it, i will be happy with my first plants.

So my setup looks like the pictures below... (yes its ghetto and in my room, and the 3rd picture is my first light setup, i added the second light today)

In all the cups i just used regular dirt that i dug up from the ground outside (yes i am too lazy to buy mircale grow/any other type of treated soil). How bad is that for my plant? Also...I am going to be placing these plants outside to grow, and i was wondering when I should plant them outside.

In the red cup (i planted a few days before the others), i planted 2 seeds because i was told it doesnt matter...now i realize it kind of does. Should i try to split them up into two different cups? Also you might notice the one that is held up by the pencil fell over recently, (was growing well with greenish colored stem, now it is brownish) and i was told i might need more light and some air/fan moving around. So i put a small fan about 2-3 feet away which blows minimal air around the area.

The other cups all have 1 seed in them, and are about 3 days old. Red cup is about 5-6 days old. I water them lightly once a day, and leave the light/s on for about 16-18 hrs (timer broke so i turn them off when i go to bed and wake up early and turn back on)


Basically I would like to know....
-When should i plant these outside? (How should i do this?)
-Should i split up the 2 plants in the red cup?
-Should i add miracle grow or some type of soil or nutrients to these plants grow?
-What should i do to help the weak plant get stronger?
-Any other tips would be well appreciated

You obviously are too lazy to do much in the way of research, else you would have discovered answers to your all your questions and many more right here on these forums.

Furthermore, since you haven't put any effort into this, why should busy and successful growers put forth any effort to help you?

sry for not explaining clearer, I described my laziness as what i did to begin growing, but now i am more interested in actually getting more into doing it correctly. I understand what you are saying, but what i meant to say was that a lot of the info was controversial, and i would see one website said to do this...and then the next said to do that...so what i was basically asking was what should i do to answer these questions in your own ways. I ask because i know the people on these forums are smart and up to date on best growing ways, instead of sites that are out of date, or just incorrect in their findings.

So basically, I am trying to become not so lazy, and actually improve my plants, that is why i ask these questions, not because I am lazy and can't do research on my own.

when they have established a rigid stem and a few nodes worth of leaves.

-Should i split up the 2 plants in the red cup?
never should have planted in the same container to begin with, unless for some retarded reason you were going to grow them in the same container one inch from eachother for their life. Split asap before roots become entangled to the point where you kill them splitting them.

-Should i add miracle grow or some type of soil or nutrients to these plants grow?
You should use soil intended for your application, that being said, do a little reading, everyone is going to come up with a soil system/nute program that works for them. Kinda gotta earn some stripes here

-What should i do to help the weak plant get stronger?
try giving it more light. Plenty of threads on here about how to have complete harvests from CFL bulbs you can buy at home depot.

-Any other tips would be well appreciated
look around here at others grow logs. and if you have a question, try using the search feature on the forums and look for whatever keyword you need.

Don't seem needy, as in, I need help setting shit up. You probably need a lot more help than anyone here can give you from the sounds of it, that's why you need to get dirt under your nails and share your fuck ups and what you learned from them with the rest of the world. I'm stoned off my beautiful homegrown, so I'll quit rambling.

It should be pointed out that growing something, especially something you want to consume, is a commitment and requires some work. If this is your hobby then hopefully you get some enjoyment from doing this work and the pleasure of harvesting your own home grown mj. But it requires some time and effort on your part.

My personal grow requires aprox. 2 hrs per day, some days it's just a quick look to see that the lights came on and to check high and low temps etc. Other days it's 3-4 hrs to take cuttings or to transplant cuttings for veg. In my bloom room between crops it takes about 4-6 hrs to sterilize the machine and trays used, and to clean the entire room; walls, ceiling, floor etc. Since I'm getting older I usually do these cleanings in 2 parts.

The old farmers saw "you reap what you sow" holds true for even mmj.

Alright well im back and need some advice...

I am going to make a box for the plants to grow in...I have a big cardboard box, i was thinking of lining it with tinfoil ect. and putting a light or two that will hang from the top. Is this a good or bad idea? Obviously its better than what i was doing before, but is there something i should know about this idea?

Also, i bought some miracle-gro all purpose plant food, and some miracle-gro moisture control potting mix. I was wondering what would be the best thing to do with the potting soil. Is it bad to try to mix the regular soil with the potting soil? How would i do this without ruining the roots and such? And should i feed the plants with nutes everytime i water? or every few days?

I know that some of these questions have been answered on other threads, but i get a lot of questionable answers, that seem to be right and wrong on different threads...what is your advice? Ill get a few pictures up when im done. Thanks.

You need to put lots of light(don't even use this thread to ask about lighting, figure it out) above your plants. You also, to change soil, need to uproot the entire mix in the pot and TRANSFER the root-ball to a newly set pot. Mix your mir grow with lots of perilite from the store(you must buy this..and a few more things if you want to succeed so act now or toss that shit, including your soil cuz it all is useless less you put forth a LOT more effort and get this thing fully established).
Lights
Perlite to better mix your MG soil
ventiliation(fan-no duh, and anything else like duct tape etc that you would need to satisfy your plants' ventilation needs)
reflection(anything around the plant and lights must help at reflecting any light back)
oh and water when "It Is Dry" the soil it wet when watered moist when settled and DRY when DRY; this is when you water.
Distance from lights is also important
Seedlings have differences from adults, they do enjoy a more moist environment i believe. Oh, and you Will mess up, sorry.

Don't use tinfoil. It's not that reflective, but it can put little pinpoints of ultra-bright light on the plant and burn the leaves. Make sure you are aware of flammability. Cardboard can catch fire and even cfl fixtures can build up heat, although probably not enough to set the box on fire. But anything's possible. Headshake knows a lot about using cardboard so try reading his grow log. It's also very informative in general not just related to cardboard boxes.

I would recommend holding off on nutrients until you start to see the leaves turning a bit yellow. Young plants (and grown ones) burn very easily from nutes. Once the plants are growing I wouldn't recommend trying to get the soil off their roots. Have you ever grown container plants before? You should just take a bigger pot, put enough soil that the height of soil in your cup will reach the top of the new pot, water that soil, turn the cup upside down and tap it with the stem of the plant between two fingers of the other hand so you won't drop it. Then put the soil and root ball into your new pot, put enough soil to fill in the edges and a little more on top, then water it and you're done. You want to disturb the roots as little as possible.

Ok so heres what i have fixed so far...and created...(pictures at bottom)

Tomorrow I am going out to get real pots to put the plants in, along with somewhat resoiling them with the miracle gro soil, like JD1stTimer said, and possible add some perlite to the mixture. I am also thinking of replacing the tinfoil with the reflective looking stuff that u see in the inside of some lunch coolers (sorry i forget the name, but its like insulated as well) and i figured that would help lower the risk of fire? (just guessing but makes sense...i think)

Also i know that i need more lights, i have just 2 going right now, but i need to figure out how to use more without necessarily creating a lighting apparatus. I am also going to get a temp gauge and a humidity gauge, as well as a pH tester.

I tried replanting the plant in the red cup to a different cup to split the 2 plants...but i didn't realize how wet the soil was, and how shitty it was and it broke apart in my hands, and it came apart from its roots. I replanting it standing up thinking maybe something would happen...then i read about cloning, and that it will grow roots again? not exactly sure what happens, but how will i know if the plant is growing roots and going to survive, or if its going to die? Im thinking its still surviving because it is keeping its green color.

Yes i know the box setup is very ghetto and I apologize if something i said made no sense, im pretty baked right now, and im tryin to make sure these plants will growww! :jointsmile:
