LED bulb! LED Experts, advise?
Got a gift from a friend today to try out. It is a
GE LED10p3ls830
magnified 10 watt unit.
It is VERY bright similiar to HID type lighting, looks like the sun when you look into it! Very heavy bulb too, weighs about a pound!
Will this help my grow at all, or just a waste or space?
looks like this, but a little bigger

The lamp in the photo has a bi-pin base. Is that how the 10W is? Or is it a standard "Edison" screw-in household-lightbulb-type base?
Do you have access to a spec sheet on it? Would be helpful to know the approximated color temp (use it for veg, or flower?) and/or if it was designed for a reading light, say, or general household illumination.
"White" leds are just blue leds with a filter coating to make them appear white to our eyes. The coating makes the led less efficient.:( So your light isn't going to hurt anything (unless you've already got heat problems) but would be less effective than an equal amount of watts-burned in a red/blue system.

There are about 20 different UFO lookin' lamps out there. Many are manufactured using cheap parts by folks with no regard for Western intellectual property rights or any scruples as far as "truth in advertising" goes. People buy these lights, figger out they done been lied to, and wash their hands of leds forever after. Tell all their friends "leds no workee." :(
Unless you know what emitters are in the unit (and how they're being driven) you are stuck taking the mfg.'s word for what you're buying. Chinese opportunists have poisoned pets and babies by artificially boosting protein levels in rice protein and milk products with melamine, among other scandalous behavior. You wanna trust them for a hort light? Who's gonna enforce a complaint against 'em, the BBB? What's your recourse? Protest in front of their embassy? :angry3:
I think folks are ready to start some "gutshot" threads of the various UFO ripoffs exposing what components are actually in the various units. It ain't usually what they claim, trust me. Procyons are the only pre-fab units I'd feel confident buying at this point, except for huge-money T1 Smart lamps and comparable legit pro hort setups.
Just my .02. Just hate to see folks git took advantage of by liars. That's what our own politicians are for. ;) Hermie.

...and buy yourself a UFO, and pop it open so we can see what's really in it. Not trying to be pushy, really. :hippy:

Oh, go ahead, push a little.
It's good exercise.
I'll show him mine if he'll show us his.;)
It's only 3 screws.
I routinely open anything that could burn my house down.
'Cause sometimes, a circuit breaker can't save you!
Just had the plug on a Made in China clothes iron burst into flames.
The 20 amp. breaker never even noticed.
Luckily, the wife did.
