i have a buddy that told me when i transplant into a three gallon or bigger pot, that i should put about a inch of stone in the bottom of the pot for a dry base. should i do this?

It's not a bad idea...I put a layer of vermiculite, close to the bottom. Perlite or even pea gravel, would work too.
Drill extra holes in the pots, too.
