Making a hydroponic grow box - need help.

I'm making a lil grow space in a small space about 1' x 1' x 2' (2' being the height). I plan on making a hydroponic watering system, but I got a few questions that need answering.

1. Does it really matter if my hydroponic system is ebb & flow or a dripper system? I was watching this grow tutorial and the guy said that he first used a dripper system, but used an ebb & flow system for the flowering stages. Is that really necessary? Can I get away with just using an ebb & flow, bcuz thats just so much easier to make.

2. What are those green spongy things that u put the plants into called? also what are those round rocky lookin things that people always put around the plants called?

3. Do I need to put any nutrient additives into the water? will regular mirace gro work?

O & also can I use a regular compact flourescent lightbulb (u kno, the energy saving ones that fit into regular light sockets) for the whole grow, or is it an absolute must to buy an HPS light for the flowering.

I think can answer a few of your questions:

1) I don't believe there is a problem with just using ebb&flow (at least that is my understanding, I haven't actually done that), but I'll let a hydro expert answer that for sure. I am pretty sure that is what stinky uses, but I might be wrong.

2) I think you might be talking about rockwool for starting seedlings. The balls you are talking about are hydroton grow rocks or something of that sort.

3) Hydroponic systems require specific hydroponic nutrients (and they are not very cheap). I am pretty sure mixing miracle grow with the water really won't do much other then kill your girls.

4) You can certainly grow under CFLs, in fact my current grow is under all CFLs. If you want the best light penetration though, you should go with an HPS. Mind you an HPS = heat issues in comparison to CFLs, at least in grow box situations.

It sounds like you may be in a little over your head with starting with a hydro system. Maybe grab some bag seeds and some decent soil and see what you can do first before you spend a bunch of money trying to build your own hydro system. If you really MUST use hydro, I'd strongly suggest searching this site and reading as much as possible about DIY hydro and grow logs involving strictly hydro. There is tons of information, just take the time to get educated before you make an expensive mess!

lol thanks for the info anyway. I ended up starting the grow, the plants are a little over a week & theyre doing awesome. heres some pics

what nutes did you finally decside on?

I ended up using floragro and florabloom. This grow already ended though. I ended up with 3 males. it sucked but it was my first grow so i was still proud. I currently have another grow goin on, in a bigger and better grow box, with 3 separate containers all fed by the same water pump. one plant is currently flowering while the other 3 are still in veg. im hopin to god its female this time
