DIY Odor Neautralizer or Carbon Filter?

Hey everyone,

Have a closet setup, with a big T8 Fixture, I leave the door open to the bedroom, so heat isn't a problem.

I do not exhaust the air out of the room, and on my last grow, a couple of my roomates were complaining about the smell (they know they're there).

I'm gonna do about 5 sugar berries. Is that enough to necessitate a carbon filter? Or would the DIY Odor Neutralizer with ONA work well enough? I did an odor neautralizer with Febreeze instead of ONA and was unhappy with the results (probably because Febreeze isn't for the AIR).

Also, if I do need to make a carbon filter. Do I just need to add a fan and set it somewhere in the room since I'm not exhausting the air?

I would go with the carbon filter. I would try to run it through the roof of the closet.

ONA is the THE SHIT!

I use the little 6oz ONA Block...it's like a little jar you just take the lid off of. i put the jar inside my duct work (as far from the fan as possible, gives it plenty of time to do it's job). so the air goes through my carbon filter, picks up some ONA and travels through the ducts and out the fan.

I've had ZERO smell problems since. I have a friend with a very sensitive nose and he's always saying he can smell weed as soon as he walks in the door. Ever since i put that little jar in the room he says he can't smell anything.

i actually bought a few of them...one for the grow room, one for the cat boxes, and one just around the house. they are expensive ($8 each!) but god damnit they are so worth it. Put one in your closet, and one in the main living area and you should be A-OK.

Here's the deal....I'd like to exhaust the air, but frankly... I'm scared I'm gonna fuck something up and be left with a gaping hole in the floor or ceiling.

I understand the concept...pull fresh air in from the floor, pull air out through a carbon filter so your air is cleaned as it's exhausted. I'm a little worried about temps. I leave the door to the closet open about a foot, and temps stay around 80. I leave the door to the bedroom locked. Well it's getting cold here now... and I'm only running an 8 tube FLO fixture so it doesn't put off heat like MH or HPS's.

Would my temps get too low by flowing cold air from outside through my closet? What about at night when the lights are off? Surely they'd freeze, right?

An intake and exhaust should be used even if your growin' with an open door during "lights on"...Much healthier for the plants as it exchanges the air, makes it easier to keep closet cool,reduces the chance of bud-mold,etc...
As far as oder control I'd use both...The carbon filter to catch whatever you scrub outta your closet during "lights-off" and the odor neutralizer to help maintain a sense of normalcy,:angelsmiley: during "lights on"...Those big vanilla candles also help...
As far as making nice holes,hole-saw for sheet-rock and wood,core-bore for masonry and rebar...If your not handy,hire it done...Well worth it...
Cold outdoor air is great for cooling a closet grow as long as its buffered and not blown directly on the grow...

You have a legitimate concern with the cold air coming in. I live in western NY and we get tons of cold weather so i'm dealing with a similar situation.

I have an oil heater (Honeywell® 7 Fin Oil Filled Radiator Heater with Digital Controls - HZ-709 by Kaz Inc. - Honeywell - Honeywell Central) that i put in front of my intake, so any cold air coming in passes by the heater first. i have 2 HPS lights that warm my room up to 82 so i only use the heater during lights off. My heater has a nice built in timer and thermostat so i set it for 12 hours, 72 degrees and the lowest power setting.

try something like that. but fresh air in is important...even with the cold.

Hey Guys:

Here is a CFL bulb that last for 10,000 hours and is bright as hell. Can be used for growing and also purifies the air and eliminates odors..the ones we don't want other people smelling from out plants. I just bought 5 of this shit and it works. Hope it helps!

GO to ebay and search for Sanibulb. This bulb eliminates odors from the plants...and provides the lighting the plant needs while saving on 75% electricity. Get it and try it. Sanibulb kills all the bad smell and odors from smoking cigarettes and marijuana. Kills the smoke and the smell.

You can buy titanium dioxide for $5/lb if you look around on the net. Its used in making DIY soap. Thats the stuff they use on the odor control CFLs. I'm thinking of using it on reflectors. I wonder how many CFL's a pound would cover.

hey sunbudu3, those lights are only 15 watts...you better buy 200 of them. instead of buying "odor control lights" look of CHILDREN OF BODOM's DIY carbon filter. It is probably the best and CHEAPEST carbon filter fabrication I have seen on this site. Costs about 30 for supplies, a lot for the carbon, but you can use that "crystals only cat liter" in place of the carbon...its like 8 bucks a bag...hope it helps
