WASHINGTON - Joe Biden??s penchant for gaffes took the spotlight yesterday, after he criticized an ad put out by his own campaign, referred to FDR appearing on ??television,? and was mildly rebuked by presidential candidate Barack Obama.
In an interview broadcast on CBS Monday, Biden said a campaign ad that mocked Republican presidential candidate John McCain as an out-of-touch, out-of-date computer illiterate was ??terrible? and would not have been done had he known about it.
Asked why it was done, he said:
??I didn??t know we did it, and if I had anything to do with it, we??d have never done it.?
Late Monday, Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton issued a statement from Biden. In it, Biden said he ??was asked about an ad I??d never seen? and was ??reacting merely to press reports.?
??Having now reviewed the ad, it is even more clear to me that given the disgraceful tenor of Sen. McCain??s ads and their persistent falsehoods, his campaign is in no position to criticize,? Biden said.
Also in the CBS interview,
Biden said, ??When the stock market crashed, Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television and didn??t just talk about the, you know, the princes of greed. He said, ??Look, here??s what happened.?? ?
Republican Herbert Hoover was in office when the stock market crashed in October 1929 - well before the advent of TV.
Obama made a rare rebuke of his running mate in an interview with NBC yesterday morning.
Anchor Matt Lauer asked Obama about his criticism of Republican rival John McCain for his flip-flop on the AIG bailout, noting Biden also initially opposed the bailout.
??And I think that, in that situation,?
Obama said, ??I think Joe should have waited, as well.?Joe Biden opens mouth, inserts foot on Barack Obama ad - BostonHerald.com
