Saturday's Gallup Poll: Obama's on a roll

In the latest Gallup Poll Saturday, Barack Obama has hit his previous high-water mark of approval in the 2008 presidential race. Obama leads John McCain, 50-44 percent.

However, this week will be a major test for both candidates, with the first presidential debate coming up on Friday.

Obama is hoping to continue to keep his momentum rolling. Meanwhile, McCain is struggling to regain his footing, especially now that the excitement among independent voters over Sarah Palin is largely over.

Palin is still extremely popular with the GOP base. But as McCain's week-long slide in Gallup Polls shows, a lot of other Americans have big questions about her competency.
