Mothers from feminized seeds??

Hey all,

I know this subject has been brought up before, and yes, I've done plenty of searching through existing posts..

I'm happy to report I ended up with on the order of 10.5 oz of the 5 plants from my last grow. This was 8 oz of nicely trimmed bud, the rest is low buds and trim I'll use to make hash. From a lighting standpoint, this came out to about .42g per watt (600w with 8 sq. ft of space) Now, looking to improve yield and increase my harvest frequency.

Part of my strategy is to grow a couple of mothers for clone stock.. I made a trip to the Sensi Seed Bank and brought back:

White Widow, Blue Berries and White Diesel (White Label brand) all feminized. Being the dumb ass I am, I of course did most of my reading on feminized seeds after the fact.. Also picked up Black Domina and White Rhino (non-fem!!), so maybe not a total dumb ass.

With the tendency of the feminized seeds to go hermie here's what I'm thinking for a solution:

1. Wait for cooler weather to start the feminized seeds to avoid heat stress, both boxes are a bit hot right now (82-89 during the day with lights). Up in the great Pac Northwest, it'll be cooler in a month.
2. Once ready, flip to 12/12 and use Dutch Masters Reverse as a prophylaxis for hermies.
3. Re-apply Reverse in 10 days.
4. Clone the strongest for potential mothers.

I guess the major question I have is, will the hermie tendencies from a plant grown from feminized seed follow the clone? If so, I guess I'll be buying more Reverse.

I also have seeds from my first grow from 3 plants, all of which were very nice and appeared to be mostly indica. These were pollinated by a hermie sativa, also very nice (less the nanners :( ). Any comments on if I might be dealing with any stability issues from these beans?

The rest of my increased production strategy was to increase my grow space, so I added a second box for mothers/veg, using a 48" T-5 fluorescent pan fixture.

I'd wait on the reverse until you determine which of the plants is LEAST LIKELY to herm, and that one should be considered for your mother. Also look at overall vigor. I don't believe Reverse prevents herming actually; it DOES prevent seed formation in plants exposed to pollen.

Remember that not all plants grown from feminized seed are prone to herming. You don't know HOW the breeder forced the herm, or how difficult that was. A chemically-hermed plant may not herm under photoperiod stress. Almost ANY plant will herm under heat extreme stress.

For some reason I'd drawn the conclusion that Reverse was preventing the nanners.

Let's wait until someone who knows chems better chimes in. This is a good question for Weedhound, who uses it I think, or Rhizome, who just knows shit... lol

I've never used Reverse myself, but what I hear about it sure sounds like an Ethephon analouge- Ethephon metabolizes into ethylene, which greatly delays staminate flowering. Like to the point that the plant is dead before the male flowers start to mature. Same tech that gives us seedless cucumbers.

I'll be interested to get Weedy's impressions, though- she's got a good eye.

That's exactly how I thought it was supposed to work, and Reverse is also reported to be used in growing seedless veggies.

So in regard to feminized seeds, does anyone know if there is a smaller incidence of hermaphroditeism dependent on the method used to force the seed stock to hermie? Chemical vs. photo period? Not that I know how White Label Seeds did it, more for learning now.. I'm also assuming any tendency of the seed plant will follow in it's cloned progeny?

Big long thing that kinda touches on your question here.

It's always a stress response, but what stressor was used to trigger makes a big differance. You might not know if you had a light leak in your room, but it'd be hard not to know that you had sprayed everything w/ colchicine. Fer instance, you'd have to actually get the colchicine. And you'd remember putting the respirator on.

Cuttings aren't progeny. They're multiple instances of the same individual.
