New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson says Sen. John McCain's campaign is run by lobbyists that represent Georgia and other countries.
As Georgian military forces launched a large-scale military offensive against South Ossetia on the eve of the opening ceremony of the Olympic games and Russia, in response, moved its forces to the region, a clash between the supporters of two White House runners was triggered over the crisis.
"He takes huge amounts of money from oil companies that are profiting in the (former) Soviet Union and many parts of the world," Richardson said Sunday.
"This has been one of the failures of the Bush administration, to build a strong relationship, a mutually beneficial relationship with Russia, so we'd have the kind of influence to persuade them to stop some of these very, very dangerous efforts within their territory," he added.
John McCain urged Russia to "immediately" halt military operations while Barack Obama demanded that Georgia's territorial integrity be respected.
Richardson, a former US envoy to the UN said that McCain's frequent calls to expel Russia from the G8 club of powerful nations would prove disastrous if enacted.
"I believe what Senator McCain is proposing is totally, totally wrong," he said, stressing the United States needs Russia's help with Middle East peace and in Iraq.
Russian officials had earlier said that Georgia would never be able to attack South Ossetia without the support of the US.

I love how politicians make accusations. It happens on both sides. Geez guys, how can you call the kettle black. It isn't like Obama hasn't received campaign money from oil companies as well. But eh... If the Republicans had the mud they would've slinged it in Obama's direction too. Damn politicians.

What are these huge amounts they're talking about. The estimated 2 million that they tried to pin on McCain has been dwindled down to an ACTUAL 1 million or slightly less I believe. Obama has received something in the neighborhood of 400k-600k. C'mon now author of this article. Why don't you point out the contrast to what Governor Richardson is saying?
And a failure of the Bush Administration? How about a failure of all administrations. When have we actually been on really good terms with the Russia/Soviet Union. There have been no great efforts for as long as I can remember. The closest we had was during Reagan's era, but this was just on the surface. The technological cold war was still going on. What Richardson talking about, if he wants to blame this administration then he would have to go back in the past and blame countless administrations.

I can agree with this. If Russia was out of the picture other powers such as the US and Britain would be able to do as they pleased. The balance would be out of order. This is probably the only piece of the article I thought had any substance to it. Even then it's light at best.

Totally wrong? I can see how we definitely need to discuss with Russia but I feel totally wrong is harsh here. Russia has an obvious vested interest in Iran as does China. I don't feel they would help us reach compromise with Iran.. instead I think they would try to force a deal that would give us none of what we're wanting.

These comments weren't against you Texas Grass.. it was the author of this article. I just found it poorly written. This is more of the political bullcrap that we could leave out of the media. We'd have less of this if we didn't have 2 majority parties. When there are dozens and dozens of parties like other nations have then the people are sort've forced into bipartisan support.
As it stands now both the Dems and the Republicans have way too much power. If Bill Richardson feels McCain is wrong on his stance then why doesn't he offer him some Bipartisan advice instead of just complaining about it? He won't because it's just a means of slamming McCain to make his own party look better.
It's frustrating that this is what our news reporting has become; basically mud slinging between two Gangs!

I think we may be arguing the same point, but in response to your question about what help Russia has been to us, I would have to speculate that they've probably helped with the war on terror as much as George H W Bush did while he was in office. We may have been able to avoid this useless war altogether if George I hadn't been supplying Saddam Hussein with biological and conventional weapons during the Iran Iraq war. Its amazing that most people dont know that at one point Saddam Hussein was our ally. Know when that point was? when it was convenient for the USA. When Saddam was fighting the bad guy, iran, it was perfectly ok to arm Saddam's entire fucking military illegally. But now that thats over, were not less one bad guy, were stuck with a stronger one. Now, however many years later and with 3,000+ of our soldiers dead from the Iraq war, I cant stop myself from wondering if we could have avoided this altogether if we had kept a past president from arming a KNOWN terrorist nation to further its economic greed. I mean, security.

Campaign contributions from oil industry executives to Sen. John McCain rose dramatically in the last half of June, after the senator from Arizona made a high-profile split with environmentalists and reversed his opposition to the federal ban on offshore drilling.
Oil and gas industry executives and employees donated $1.1 million to McCain last month -- three-quarters of which came after his June 16 speech calling for an end to the ban -- compared with $116,000 in March, $283,000 in April and $208,000 in May.
