what flowering plants can I get for texas winter.

I wanted to get some flowering plants for my backyard by the porch.
they need to be very very colorful and also need to be able to grow in the south texas winters. so they need to be able to grow/flower all year around.

so tell me what I should go get.

and also if U want to yall can post pix of plants yall have that have big flowers on them.

you wont find any type of plant that will flower all year round. most bloom for like 2 weeks then gone others can bloom all summer long but when fall hits they gone.

or I'll take some tropical plants too. eather kind of plant will do.

Its that it just looks lame and ulgy back there.

my whole sid yard has nice plants and such so I wanted to do the same to the back part of the yard.

What is the maximum/minimum temperature in your back yard in winter?
IF it does not drop below about 45, I would suggest starting to collect Zygos, like Christmas cacti, and the other species that flower at different times- they are photoperiod sensitive and flower in winter. You can get them at walmart for like a couple bucks each around the holidays, and they stand up well to cool, dry weather. They are a hanging plant btw.
And what about foliage plants like 'money plant' or primitive tree-fern types?

what kind of lighting are you getting where you want to plant? how much shade/how much sun? how tall are you looking for it to get? you should check out some of your local garden centers around town........they will have tons of great stuff to show you.

Pansies are pretty much the main thing I use here in GA during our "Winters".
There are quite a few other things that will bloom or at the least have pretty foliage in the winter. I just can't think of them off the top of my head. You could contact nurseries, seed banks and so on about what you're looking for.

I live outside of Houston, and trust me on this one, nothing will bloom for you year round. I've tried for years. I simply plant annuals, and for wintering here, I love panseys. They'll take any cold we get, and bloom through the end of April. Tons of sping/summer varities work here.

I have found an interesting plant that smells exremely skunky, and is a wonderful outdoor masking scent, though I have no idea what it's called. I picked roadside seeds for the pictured plants near Rolla MO. They flower from spring til fall. Uploading three pics, so maybe someone will know what they are...
