Question for Stinky, planting by the moon

Hi Stinky. I don't like rumor and such, I like science. And I know you do too. SO I am wondering if there is much merit to the claims about superior plants by following ancient moon phase secrets, almanacs and such... planting this crop when the moon is waxing or transplanting or sowing seeds under a new moon, etc. I hear this from a few really old tokers I know, always rambling about how they grew plants under a black-light or how you can top a male a bunch of times and make it female etc. I have heard more crap, just don't remember it all.. It pisses me off because they don't want to listen to the science I tell them. Anyway, I am sure you have heard lots about the moon and have a good answer! Thanks!

"Plant seeds by the Dark of the Moon" (new moon)- 200 years of folklore can't be completely wrong. I do it, because my mother said so....:thumbsup:

Can't hurt anyway. Too bad the Farmer's Almanac doesn't cover cannabis. The moon does affect aspects of our environment. I have no clue as to how other than the tides.The weatherchannel.com tracks the moon cycles though so it must be important for some reason.

I doubt, if gravity is much of a factor, (tides), too small a variation.

Hmm, lets think about it...

We know that some plants are strongly influenced by photoperiodicity.
So, giving a seedling almost total darkness for the first two weeks of it's life, as opposed to full moon light, by timing the planting, just might set it's "mood" for the rest of it's life.
It just might change the number of weeks 'till flower, if the plant has "expectations" imprinted in the first two weeks of life.
Or the eventual height, or leafyness, or attitude, etc.

Ah dunno really, but, it's food for thought.
What do you folks think?

IMVHO...
The concept of planting by moon phases is probably not much (if anything) more than a convenient calendar followed since the beginning of agriculture by farmers who did not have access to actual 'calendars' (since they weren't really accessible to the largely illiterate population). Counting moon cycles from the Winter Solstice will give you a repeatable time at which to plant. Beyond that... I think it's a bit of bunk, lol. But that's just my opinion :D

I've never had a problem in not following the phases of the moon. Does that mean I'm saying that it doesn't work...? Not really, but it definatelly does not fit my schedules, and I'm not about to create gaps in my grow-cycles waiting for the moon, or for Saturn to rise beyond Venus, or waiting for the next solar eclipse....

With all the manipulation needed to pull-off an indoor grow, I really doubt the moon has much influnce on the plants, but more like stinky said...an easy to remember 'guide' for farmers, to bring the local crops to harvest on a predictable date. (being late in delivering product to an already full market isn't very profitable)
Could simply be that the moon makes it's easier to figure-out when you're supposed to plant, if you don't own a calendar.
