Does anyone have tips on growing in soil for a first timer?

I have four 1 month grapefruit mixed with white widow plants that are in 3x3 rock wool cubes. i've decided to transplant them into soil rather than bubble buckets. This is my first time using soil, does anyone have tips to help my process along?

Check out the outdoor growing threads! Stinky has a very nice, pretty much 'how to' grow log going right now that started sometime in Jan.! I think it will answer a lot of questions for you. You have a lot of prep to do!! Good luck and I know you'll love the thread and all the info!:thumbsup:

the two most important things I can suggest are starting with a LIGHT seedling starter soil, then transplant into a compost mix once they are definitely established...
and start in very small containers to start, usually transplanting once more in veg (when you start to feed) and then another final transplant when you begin to flower. I see many people just toss a seed into some dirt and have no problems. I, on the other hand, had major lockout and dwarfing problems because I used composted manure and humus, while having them in too large of containers. The roots weren't growing efficiently and left stagnant water in the pot. As a last resort, I broke the soil away from all the stunted plants and transplanted them into seedling starter in smaller containers. Within almost 24 hours, green was restored and growth had resumed. They were at the point of crispy white leaves, with small amounts of light green left on top, and now they are picture perfect. It sucks because I read all of these suggestions, but seemed to get too excited and just did what I thought would be alright. Point of story... Read and Perform! :thumbsup:

When in doubt- add perlite.

Fill one pot w/ yer mix, but don't water it or put a plant in it- this is a referance weight, so that you can pick up the other pots and judge the water content.

Make sure that there's some way for you to catch samples of run-off to test pH/EC without too much trouble.

definitely listen to rhizome. My biggest problems in the beginning were from overwatering. Use at least 1/4-1/3 perlite and wait for the soil to completely dry before waterings! Also have a hell of a lot of fun!

Would be nice if you could start a gro log. I enjoy learning form them. Stinky's first outdoor grow log is in there and while you visit it, look at a lot of the rest. So, you don't get frightened with the first sign of any trouble. These people here will give you 200% support and keep you going well. We will all vicargiously enjoy your results! I got overly anxious and stuck some seeds to sprout and then started my research. Fortunately, the seeds were so old and not stored properly, or I'd be outside with my babies! Anyway, point being, after reading so many grow logs (Outside) I have learned there are so many ways to do anything and pretty hard to loose your plants, if you have some of the skill of these growers under your skin and them right here to help you along! Couldn't get any better than this for us! I anticipate being ready to start in several weeks (due to extreme heat)! Will be watching yours! Keep it up!:thumbsup:

Being new, like yourself and first timer, I cannot tell you how impressive Stinky's gro log is; Illustrations, etc! Things, some books don't show or explain as well! Do enjoy it and others. bcgrown (I thnk) also has an present interesting log with excellent instructions. Since, you asked for advice, I figured you also need the illustrations-information; as do I and hope u benefit from it all as much as I. It took me weeks to find how the gro logs and am still learning how to use the sight. It doesn't mean that, because the info. is elsewhere, you won't get it here. You'll just get a lot and you need it all--you never stop learning with this!!! Best to U and this gro!:stoned:
