Congressional approval ratings hit new lows

Congressional approval ratings tumbled to new lows in a spate of recent polls, as high gas prices and a sagging economy continue to hurt the publicâ??s perception of the legislative branch.

In the latest Rasmussen poll, the percentage of voters who give Congress good or excellent ratings fell to single digits for the first time in the polling firmâ??s history.

According to the July 1 survey of 1,000 likely voters, only 9 percent of respondents said Congress is doing a good or excellent job, while 52 percent surveyed said Congress was doing a poor job, which ties the record high in that category.

Republicans, eager to portray Democratic leaders as running the Congress into the ground, pounced on the numbers. But the negative perceptions of Congress as a whole do not seem to be greatly affecting views of the majority party.

Democrats still enjoy a 12 percentage point lead on Rasumssenâ??s generic congressional ballot, despite the negative views of Congress as a whole.

In addition, Democrats can point to a NBC/Wall Street Journal poll taken in mid-June, which found that by a 52 percent to 33 percent margin, people said they would rather see Democrats retain control of Congress in November.

That 19-point spread favoring Democrats is the largest recorded for either party since the question was first asked in 1994.



Those numbers, however, did not stop eager Republicans from seizing on the dismal generic congressional approval ratings.

Freedomâ??s Watch, a conservative lobbying organization, blasted out the results of the Rasmussen poll, seeking to portray the Democrats in disarray. Republicans, on the other hand, have their own perception problems, as some American citizens still believe they are the party in charge.

â??Not only does Congress have an approval rating below bubonic plague and head lice, I saw a recent poll that as many as 40 percent of people still believe that Congress is in Republican hands," Rep. Jeb Hensarling told the Christian Science Monitor. "I wish we could get a little accuracy out there about who is in charge â?? and let those ratings fall where they may."

Almost makes a person hope that the dems win controll of all three houses.....after 4 years of that crap the people won't be voting dem for MANY years to come. :lol5:

What if we were to pass a minimum vote law? 75% of the people have to vote in an election or becomes null. That would mean a lot of vacancies in government.:thumbsup:

Seriously though, I think that Democrats will take the White House and solid margins in both houses of congress. So your wish is very likely to be granted! Lucky you!

The current congress has been largely ineffective because of the very slim margins --- no ability to overcome a veto or break a filibuster. With Obama in office, the veto threat will not be a concern, and with a bit more margin in the Senate, filibusters will not be a concern either. We'll get a chance to see what a responsible adminstration and congress can do to clean up the mess the Republicans have got us into! Same old story --- Democrats cleaning up Republican messes and paying off Republican debts.

Didn't the dems control congress for something like 40 or 50 years. In which time the dems had sitting presidents as well?

Cali is primarily a democratic controlled state, one of the largest economies in the world, yet, not doing so well. Why?
Point being, dems in control of congress is going to be pretty uneventful, aside from taxes being raised and the continued trend to spend spend spend, expand the government, and attempt to lure people into the mindset that they just can't get ahead, and need that help from big brother. The more they can make/enable peoples to become Dependant upon them, the better the odds of them holding power. It's not really about anything more than that. The Social Welfare State is what they are ultimately after. They want the minds of our children, they want their hope and aspirations too. They want to erase any notion of individualism at any level, and ultimately they want to destroy this country.

On a lighter note, I made some really really kick ass iso tonight, god damn I love that shit!

2 things.
1st thing.
It would be unconstitutional and illegal to pass such a law.
2nd thing.
Somehow having massive gov. shut down, in some ways would be excellent. In fact their was this really smart guy once that did that....oh what was his name, um...Fig Newton, Nuter Gringo:stoned:, something like that. It was awesome actually and a turning point in modern political history here in the U.S.:D
