A woman has spoken of her horror at discovering a 4ft long snake in her lavatory bowl.
Kay Robins, 26, was stunned when she found the escaped Californian King Snake poking its head over the seat.
It is believed the yellow and black snake slithered through the sewage system after escaping from a neighbouring home.
Ms Robins locked herself in the lavatory with the snake to ensure it did not escape and attack her three-month-old daughter who was sleeping in the room next door.
Kay, of Quedgeley, Glos., said: "My heart was in my mouth. I couldn't scream because I was so scared.
"I saw the tail poking out from the rim of the loo and thought Brian was playing a trick on me until I saw it moving.
"I couldn't believe it. What on earth was a snake from California doing in my bathroom? Needless to say I couldn't use the lavatory for a while after that!"
Ms Robins and her fiance tried flushing the reptile back down the lavatory but the snake returned and slithered onto the bathroom floor.
She said: "I was worried about the safety of my three-month-old baby.
"We didn't know at first if it was venomous and if it was vicious it could have tried to kill Summer. I was determined to keep it in the bathroom."
The couple eventually caught the non-venomous snake and put a bin over it until emergency RSPCA crews arrived.
The RSPCA recovered the snake and it is now at a wildlife rehabilitation centre.

I like how they tried to flush it. I guess that's what anyone would do, but it still seems funny.

When I was a kid there was as rumor going around that a woman saw a snake in the toilet at a Waldbaum's supermarket. The story became embellished with the claim that it bit her on the tushy.
There were also many rumors about alligators in the New York City sewer system. The legend was that baby alligators, which had been brought back from Florida as children's pets, were flushed down toilets when they became too big to keep, and ended up thriving in the sewers.

NEW YORK â??
There was no Halloween bogeyman in the closet for one Brooklyn woman â?? just a 7-foot-long python in her toilet.
Nadege Brunacci was washing her hands in her bathroom before dawn Monday when she glanced back and saw the slithering serpent peeking out from her toilet, most of its body hidden in the pipes.
"I turned on the light and screamed," Brunacci, 38, told the New York Daily News. "It still makes my heart race."
Brunacci slammed down the lid, put a heavy box on top of the toilet and began calling for help, which came from her landlord and firefighters. Plumbers had to tear apart the downstairs neighbor's pipes to capture the snake, she said.
It's unclear how the snake made its way into the pipes.
Brunacci, a restaurateur, says she gave the snake to a friend who keeps it as a pet and named it after her.
Brunacci says she started using her daughter's training toilet after the scare in her third-floor apartment. And when she brushes her teeth, she said, "I'm looking over my shoulder."
