Barack Obama called Hillary Clinton twice to congratulate her on her primary win in South Dakota and try to schedule a sit-down together.

Clinton returned his two voice-mail messages at 12:16 a.m. ET, less than 10 minutes after his second call.

Obama congratulated Clinton and said he wants â??to sit down when it makes sense for you.â?�

She thanked him for the call and told him that she was sure they will do so, Obama advisers said.

Obama advisers said they were unsure if Clinton congratulated Obama on his win in Montana or his wrapping the Democratic presidential nomination. During her primary night speech, Clinton did not concede nor discuss what she plans to do next.

â??This has been a long campaign, and I will be making no decisions tonight,â?� Clinton said, begging patience of a party desperate to unite. â??In the coming days, Iâ??ll be consulting with supporters and party leaders to determine how to move forward with the best interests of our party and our country guiding my way.â?�

Speculation has been spreading over whether Obama would invite Clinton to share the ticket as his running mate.

Clinton has only encouraged the discussion, even noting during her speech that everyone wants to know what she wants. Besides a strong economy, universal health care and the troops out of Iraq, Clinton said she wants â??the nearly 18 million Americans who voted for me to be respected, to be heard and no longer to be invisible.â?�

Clinton advisers add that she wants to retain her political leverage and is eying a spot on the ticket, a convention role and perhaps other benefits.

â??I am committed to uniting our party,â?� she said Tuesday night, â??so we move forward stronger and more ready than ever to take back the White House this November.â?�

Obama aides have tried to tamp down talk of a potential Clinton vice presidential slot, and have said that Obama will take some time before he chooses his running mate. Chief strategist David Axelrod said Obama doesnâ??t have a vice presidential list yet, and â??itâ??s way too early to talk about that.â?�

Axelrod also called Clinton â??an incredibly formidable person.â?�

With victory in hand, Obama is looking to mend the wounds of the protracted primary and getting her supporters on board his candidacy before November. He praised Clinton on Tuesday for â??her strength, her courage and her commitment to the causes that brought us here tonight.â?�

I have a feeling this might go down similar to how things went down in the Manchurian candidate

I don't think he'll pick her as a running mate.

For one thing, it would go too much against his message of "change" to pick someone so representative of the establishment. Also, she has a huge organization of people who are loyal to HER not to him who would come along for the ride, and I'm not sure I would want that joining my campaign if I were him. I don't think I'd want Bill along for the ride either.

She should have conceded tonight and suspended her campaign and let him have his moment. I think the fact that she did not shows she puts herself and her own interests ahead of the party's best interests and ahead of Obama's interests. And it shows how hard she would be to work with. She would not be a good partner. I think if she had had any shot at all of getting on the ticket, she probably blew it tonight by not conceding graciously.

When I watched her speech, it seemed to me she kept making the case for how strong her hand is, even though it is clear she has lost. I got the impression of her PRESSURING him to pick her. There is no way he can afford to have it look like his first presidential decision was to cave in to pressure from Hillary Clinton!

I don't think he'll pick her either.

But who knows. The planets could align or something. ;)

I doubt it. He would have 2 VPs that way.
