Breeding and Growing Terms
I would like to be able to use the proper terms when speaking or writing about growing mj. I've not been able to find these terms defined in one place. What do you call a seed or a plant that you derive from cross pollination? What is a hybrid? What does Inbred, F1, F2 mean? What's Landrace? What is a strain?
If anyone would like to explain one or two of these I'd really appreciate it. I'd like to be able to use proper terminology in my posts.

Hybrid- Two plants that are significantly different are crossed. The resultant offspring is a hybrid technically called the F1 [first filial] generation.
If the F1 offspring are crossed to each other, this is called the F2 generation.
If the F1 offspring are crossed back to either parent, this is BX1, the first backcross generation.
If selection is consistent over time for the same traits, eventually you end up with an IBL, or In Bred Line, where all offspring are identical, and the filial generations no longer apply.
Landrace is a term for a very well established wild line of cannabis that has grown for centuries with minimal human intervention. It is genetically stable and quite pure for the traits it carries.
A strain can mean different things to different people- It gets my hackles up when I see people calling unstabilized, non-repeatable F1 hybrids 'strains'. I like to use the term primarily for AT THE MINIMUM a F1 hybrid that has been released consistently from a specific pair of breeder parents that are backed up so that the breeder can continue to produce identical seeds at will. To me, even that is a bit of a stretch. But in normal use around the forums, the term 'strain' is tagged on any line (landrace, hybrid, or IBL) that has unique and identifiable traits specific to itself.
Hope that helps a little.

My coffee didn't even get cool when you replied. <G>
So, if we are talking about a bastard plant is there a term other than strain or F1 that we could use?

Bastard plant = hybrid that you don't know who da daddy is? :D
Of course, to further complicate things, there's an IBL called Aussie Bastard Hemp that looks like something completely other than cannabis!

stinky have you seen a new guy on icmag that has crossed ABH with a ducksfoot? looks very different than cannabliss. He says hes looking for a distributer to supply the stealthy outdoor folk. kinda interesting.

Does he have any numbers on potency yet? From all I've seen, early attempts ar ABH / ABC crosses aren't drug-grade and/or the leaf mutation doesn't show up. I'ma go poke around. Hopefully this isn't another too good to be true claim!
Edit: Found it. And looks like I was about on target, lol.
