For a party that loves to hate the Clintons, Republican voters have cast an awful lot of ballots lately for Senator Hillary Clinton: About 100,000 GOP loyalists voted for her in Ohio, 119,000 in Texas, and about 38,000 in Mississippi, exit polls show.
A sudden change of heart? Hardly.
Since Senator John McCain effectively sewed up the GOP nomination last month, Republicans have begun participating in Democratic primaries specifically to vote for Clinton, a tactic that some voters and local Republican activists think will help their party in November. With every delegate important in the tight Democratic race, this trend could help shape the outcome if it continues in the remaining Democratic primaries open to all voters.
Spurred by conservative talk radio, GOP voters who say they would never back Clinton in a general election are voting for her now for strategic reasons: Some want to prolong her bitter nomination battle with Barack Obama, others believe she would be easier to beat than Obama in the fall, or they simply want to register objections to Obama.

Gaming the opposing party's primary by crossing over and voting for who you think will be the weaker opponent is an example of what is wrong with American politics. This partisan extremism in which people feel it is more important for their own party to WIN than it is to do what is right for the country is going to ruin us. If a person really thinks that Clinton would make a bad president but votes for her "strategically" becasue they think she will be easier to beat, then that person is putting their parties chances of winning ahead of the country's best interests, at least in their own mind.
We wonder why politicians can't reach across the aisle and get something done --- it's because of this same mentality. Everyone has bought in to the idea that it is more important for their party to WIN than it is to do what is right for the country.
People used to blame politicians for "dirty tricks," but now we get a quarter million or so Republican voters participating in the dirty tricks. It's sad.
I think Republicans are so disappointed with their own candidate, that they are now resorting to this kind of tactic out of desperation and fear. They know McCain can't win on his own merits, so they are trying to interfere with the Democratic primary.
It would be one thing if Republicans were voting in the Democratic primary and picking the Democrat they thought would be the best. I can understand a person wanting as many good choices as possible on the ballot. But it's really pathetic that they think their own candidate is so weak that they would try to create a "lesser of two evils" election rather than just vote for the best people available. The fact is that the next president will be a Democrat, so they should be thinking about who they really want.
I support Obama over Clinton, but imagine if these Republicans do succeed in putting her over the top, and she wins the general election too. I'd love to see Rush and the rest of these "strategic" voters have to suck on it for the next four years --- THEY voted for her.

I was disappointed with ALL the candidates. Just that I feel McCain is the lesser of the three evils we have left.....like others do.

LOL...the way things are going that Democrat for President wish isn't going to happen. I can see Hillary supporters split on McCain and Obama and I can also see Obama supporters either doing the same or staying at home. Notice how McCains numbers are rising in regards to the general election?

I CANNOT understand how you could support Obama with everything that's out there on the dude but hey, your choice. As for a Clinton presidency.....NEVER happen! Come November, the LAST thing people are going to want to vote for is either a Clinton or a Bush.

Winning at any cost, or denying the other side a victory at any cost, is not always in the country's best interest. There are so many examples of one party obstructing the other on things that everyone agrees should be dealt with just because one side thinks the other will tout the achievment as a victory. The so-called Social Security "crisis" is something that could have been dealt with long ago with simple fixes everyone should have been able to agree on, but in each case the minority party thought the majority would take too much credit for it and blocked it.
The mentality that it's more important to win than to do right is one of the biggest political problems our country faces. We keep poisoning the atmosphere with these all-or-nothing tactics, and it's no wonder we can never get past it and come together to get something done.

That doesn't explain or escuse this tactic at all. Trying to get the candidate that you think is the WORST of the three nominated for the other party is a dishonest tactic that does not serve the country. Anyone who honestly thinks that Clinton would be a bad president but votes for her to give MCain a better chance is gambling with the presidency and not putting the country's interests ahead of their party's.
And for those who don't think it'll really affect the nomination but just think it is in the country's best interest to try to cause confusion and frustration in the other party is wrong. That doesn't help any of us. It just raises the level of anger and distrust and causes more division in the country. I personally resent the idea that anyone would intentionally try to distort the outcome of my party's primary. It's sleazy and arrogant.

I voted in the Wisconsin Primary....way before Rush made the announcement. McCain already had it wrapped up so what the hell, make the folks(hard core Hill dems) happy and at the same time do my own dirty work....win-win situation.
As far as Colter....she can't stand McCain. She's asking people to vote for anyone but him including the general election.
