I used to smoke two packs of cigarettes a day and I hacked up a lot more crud in the morning doing that. I'm a pretty heavy herb guy and honestly, I only ever hack up crud when I'm vaporizing (it's like my body is cleaning itself out when I do that) and I use a lot of pipe and bong. It's only ever during use do I seem to cough up stuff.
I smoked a 12" joint the other day solo and was coughing pretty hard at the end of that but that's probably heavier usage than is typical.
If you're concerned about health issues with it though, you'd want to go the vaporizer route. It's far easier on your lungs.
Also there's a lot of things to consider, IE with a bong, the better it water filters, the better it should be theoretically though I've seen some studies that say that Bongs actually have a lot of tar in them. And with joints, you're introducing hemp or rice paper to the mix. Cellulose paper does have the cleanest taste but it burns too funky for me.
I've used cannabis for 40 years, so I KNOW! Pot is tough on the lungs! Get a vaporizer! It took all of 2 weeks to undo 40 years worth of pot smoke. (I don't use tobacco- except as an insecticide!)
I'm very low income, but I can still say that the $140 I spent of a Vapor Brother's, was the best money I have spent in a long time! If you have the cash, a Volcano vaporizer is supposed to be the best, but look around, there are several (cheaper) rivals.

i used to smoke cigs its been about a month since i have had 1 or really thought about them much. one of the biggest reasons to quit was because i kept on coughing lots of green flim. i was wanting to hear what pot smokers said about only smoking pot and their lungs.
i have tried afew different vaporizers but do not like how they hit, or i havnt found a good one.
i dont mind spending the money on one considering i have abunch of multi hundred dollar pieces

Personal experience: the only time I hack up weird nasty phlegm is after a heavy night of drinking/cigarettes and after quitting tobacco (lung-clearing).
Never had a problem from my light/moderate cannabis use. If anything it seems to help. But I'd love to get a vape - can't afford it and seems to not matter if I'm filling my lungs with tobacco tar every day anyway.
