How to water from the bottom up
Ok this may seem like a stupid question, but how do you water your plants from the bottom up?
I've read in several threads where people do it but no instruction on how to do it. I can only think of dunking your pot into a larger bucket filled with water, but this would completely soak your medium like you were flushing it.
Then I thought maybe people are feeding tubes into their soil and doing it that way, but I can't see it working like that either.
So please someone shed some light on the subject. How exactly do you water your pot from the bottom up?
How to water from the bottom up
Well, watering from the bottom of the pot is usually only done when you are going to be away and have to use a wick to water your plants.
You'd take a clean bit of nylon rope and embed it into the soil with the end that is IN the pot frayed. Then place the pot, with the other end of the rope hanging down (kinda like a tampon string lol!) into a container of fresh water at correct pH.
I would not put nutes in this water, or use this method unless I went on vacation. Generally, watering to the point of slight runoff is a GOOD thing, as it constantly flushes out unused portions of the fertilizer that could potentially re-combine or interact and harm your plants.
Hope that helps some!

Helps alot, thanks.
I was more concerned with disturbing the soil that sits on top. Seems like I'm always having to redistribute the soil and my plants are LST'd pretty good (plants are slightly above the soil but completely horizontal to the pot). So getting my hands in there to work is sometimes a pain.

The very top part of the soil is okay to disturb with watering if the plant is well established. The bulk of the roots are much deeper. I've seen people lay washed rocks on the soil surface, or hydroton, but this isn't really necessary.

Flood and Drain also.

You need an appropriate medium to do flood and drain. It should be able to shed excess water quickly and not sit soggy. It's not an appropriate method for a typical soil grow.

Sorry. guess I should've been more specific and stated that I wanted to know how it would work for soil.
Flood and Drain is really only good for a hydro setup/inert medium setup I believe.
