Michelle Obama, wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, is taking heat for saying Monday at a Milwaukee rally that "for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country â?? and not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change."
Among the critics: Cindy McCain, wife of GOP candidate John McCain. "I don't know about you, if you heard those words earlier. I'm very proud of my country," she said Tuesday in Brookfield, Wis.

Barack Obama's wife is in Rhode Island today, and she's been trying to clarify a controversial remark she made earlier this week. She told an audience in Milwaukee on Monday that it's the first time in her "adult life" that she's "really proud" of her country.

Today, she told a TV station (WJAR) that she was trying to say she was proud of how Americans are engaging in the political process.

She also said she's proud of America, and that she wouldn't be where she is if it weren't for its possibilities.

And how does MSNBC handle this; they go after Bill O'Reilly for making comments regarding her comment. Not to suprising though.......my parents are hard core Clinton and are disgusted with the lack of coverage on her as compared to Obama.

she may have made a political mistake insaing that but i would venture to say that she was echoing a sentiment that is felt througout this country with people 25 - 40. im prod as hell to be an amercan but i aint very proud of the way things seem to have been goin over the past 20 or so years.

when i was in germany our gov't told me not to tell people i was an american. try goin overseas to just about anywhere in the world tell someone your an american and you get the sentiment of "oh great another american". why do people all over the world hate us so much? and dont give me its because of our freedom. other gov'ts in the world like our gov't but the people dont like us.

What a load of crap. This happens all the time. A candidate's spouse and famly are not running for office, but they get trotted out into the public eye, because everyone wants to know about them. Then they make a mistake of some kind and it turns into big news. Candidates have to watch every single thing they say, because the opposition will stomp on every single slip-up. But family members are not used to parsing every single word, so inevitably they say or do something that can be "spun" as a huge mistake.

Of course going after the wife is always a Republican strong point. Don't like what ambassador Wilson is saying? Take it out on Valerie Plame. Can't take on the man? Then publicly beat his wife. What a bunch of pussy cowards.

Good for her. Not if she had any kind of integrity she would stick to what she said. Nothing wrong with being disgusted with this country politically. This country doesn't have much to be proud of the last 50 years.
