Heavy-duty clone domes...
A while back I got tired of cracking and scratching those crappy clone domes, and was wondering if anyone else has tried these:
Clear Storage Box - Iris 33-Qt. - Stackable Boxes - CB-30
I use 400w MH to veg, and the clear domes also let in too much light for early cloning.
The lid isn't clear, but not opaque. Allows enough light to get the clones started just fine.
I line the bottom with about 1/2" of epoxy-coated aquarium gravel, and can put 12 potted clones in at a time (2 cup starter pots, gravel is washable)
Has worked great for over a year, and I don't have to worry about crushing/breaking/scratching the lid on those hard plastic domes.
Can fit 3 of them nicely in a 4' x 2' closet.
Comes in handy when transplanting into the 1 gallon pots, which you can put 6 of em in each tub. (minus the lid) Also, I don't need to put gravel in the individual pots, as the 1/2" bed of gravel provides proper drainage.

I need some of those! I can't even remember how many of those clear plastic domes I've stepped on and destroyed in the past. After which I'd have to buy yet another one, as there would be no way to make the old dome fit back on the tray. I'll be giving this a shot very soon, thanks for pointing it out!

your going to keep the lid on? what about ventilation?

You can cut a small hole for ventilation, but that wouldn't be all that necessary, as this would primarily be used to root clones. The best environment to do that is one with little light, and very high humidity. You'll replace the air every time you remove the lid, which should be plenty enough for the week or so that the clones stay in there.

I either tilt the lid up, or slide it over a couple of inches.
Just 'because it can snap closed, doesn't mean you have to.
Were I to cut holes, and wife found out I used her sweater boxes for this, I'd have to buy her some new ones.

Haha! I owe my wife two humongous Rubbermaid containers from my failed attempt at building a mother chamber. I screwed it all up and filled it full of holes, rendering them utterly useless for any truly practical purposes. (I.e. - storing things.)
