How many lights in a 7ftW x 9ftL x 7ftH area?
Hey whats up?
Ive got an area 7 x 9 x 7 ft (WxLxH) that id like to get set up, and im trying to figure out how many lights i should use in there. I was thinking maybe 2 1000w HPS, possibly more?? I plan to get the reflectors with the openings for attaching a blower or fan or whatever thru ductwork, and ballasts which can switch from hps to mh.
Thanks team pot!:jointsmile:

You should figure around 50 watts/sq.ft. - 7'x9'=63sq.ftx50= 3,150 watts. But that's if you could spread the 3,150 watts evenly, which you won't be able to do because the lamp and reflector have an effective footprint (the area they can effectively light). You can get a max 4'x5' footprint with a 1k lamp and rectangular reflector, or a little bigger than 4'x4' with a square reflector. Then you need to try to figure out how you can best utilize these footprints in the grow space you have. Light movers can be used to compensate for areas slightly larger than the ideal footprint, but you can't get too carried away with how much extra space you light.
Two 1k's would give you a grow area of 4'x9' if you used rectangular reflectors, and that would leave a little bit of room to move around in there to work on your plants. The reflectors you are referring to are called "air-cooled", so that's what you want to look for when shopping for reflectors.

Hey thanks for the reply, that formula's really useful. BTW your diy growroom was the inspiration for this one.
Im thinking now that the active space will be more like 6x8, so 2400 square ft.
Perhaps 3 600 w hps lights, in a row a couple feet apart so they can be connected would work well?
What would be the better option? 2x1000 or 3x600 if price isnt really a factor?
btw this is the light rig im looking at
DIGITAL 600 w HPS ballast AIR COOLED grow light KIT - (eBay.ca item 280192909413 end time 15-Feb-08 13:13:12 EST)
OK i cant figure out how to put up a pic but this is sort of like what im thinking:
[ = light
# = Work space/not as lit up
D = door
V = exhaust
00000V#
000000#
00[000#
000000#
00[000#
000000#
00[000#
000000D
I basically want a setup using these 600 hps systems, maybe as many as 4, to max my yield opportunities in this space.
Thanks Again!

That light looks pretty chronic to me to muah:). And u r going to put 4 of THESE in your closet??? Oh man, my mouth is watering already. If u decide to do this u had better have a dank exaust system going, or ull regret the extreme light power, and start a grow log, cause I really wanna see that room in process:dance:
Good luck and ask questions if u got em :thumbsup:
PS - Do u konw what strain/strains u will be growing in this room, by any chance??
