get rubbing alcohol..at least 70% but 90% is better....put your pipe in a ziplock pore some rubbing alcohol in it and salt. shake the bag with the stuff in it, youll see it will turn black. The rubbing alcoohol makes the resin really weak and the salt just takes it off really. Then after you think you shaken it enough take it out and rinse it off with water...and there u go
OK, it boils down to that the stuff has a nasty chemical in it to keep folks from drinking it. I wouldn't want it on my pipe! Yes, I realize there would only be a tiny trace left after rinsing, and I am being unreasonable... but I am using it with my lungs which will absorb anything.
I use plain, old, cheap vodka with good results. - Granny:hippy:
A couple things that clean a pipe or bong really well that all gearheads have laying around is Carbuerator Cleaner or K&N Air Filter cleaner, both work extremely well and super fast. Always make sure you get all of the cleaners out of the pipe/bong before you smoke again. The carb cleaner works really fast!
There's a substance that you can find online or at some headshops called formula 420. You soak the pipe(s) in it for a while, and then run some warm tap water through it. The resin should come out like strings of spaghetti.
Rubbing alcohol (isopropanol or 2-propanol) and denatured alcohol (ethanol) are two different chemicals entirely. Rubbing alcohol is VERY safe to clean a pipe with, and even safe to make solvent-extracted hash with.
If you are going to use a mechanic's cleaner on the pipe, I recommend following it with an isopropanol wash and then hot water rinse as Woooo described to remove any remaining solvent.
As for a final step to get rid of the smell... try soaking it in Listerine for an hour or so. Minty-fresh! :D
when i clean my pipe i use rubbing alcohol and pour it into a zip lock bag with my pipe. let it sit in there for a good amout of time (hour or more). then rinse with water and enjoy.
tried the salt and alcohol technique. worked great. i had no idea it was so dirty. no need to wait. just pour the salt into the pipe, put it in a ziploc, pour in the alcohol and shake hard for a minute or so.
im cleaning mine right now with a mix of:
salt
70% rubbing alcohol
listerine
all in a pastic bagg and in like half an hour or so im going to take it out and rinse it
then toke up to enjoy a nice clean pipe, just as if i bought it today

Nail polish remover works like a charm its awesome!. I think its 234234x better than rubbing alchol.
After rinsing the bowl out
put the pipe in s small bowl of nailpolish remover
let it soak and rub off resin
Let it clean out the inside- shake it to loose up etc
Wipe down and off what you can. Wash with soap afterwards to get the remover off
If you want- you can get small sauce pan- boil some water- add a little white vinegar and some remover-- let the pipe boil. This technique really cleans out the inside of the pipe
Warning the vinegar works but smellllls awful
oh and this will totally mess up the saucepan-with minimal cleaning- so just get an old pot or one you dont need.
