Preventing Powdery Mildew
I have a particular strain of mj that is a Master x Bubba hybrid. It's a really potent strain that I really like. The only problem is, it's highly susceptible to powdery mildew. I have six different strains of mother plants growing together in the mother cab. The MxB will get covered with powdery mildew while all the plants around it have none. I'm a couple weeks into veg on some plants that were cloned from the mother and I noticed yesterday that the leaves have a slightly dull patina to them - a sure sign that they are starting to develop powdery mildew.
I have a sulphur burner, and I have Serenade, so I know how to treat the powdery mildew. My question is, does anyone know how to prevent it?
I've been looking at Silica supplements. The propaganda says that silica helps strengthen cell walls. Would strengthening the cell walls make the plant less susceptible to powdery mildew?
Anyone have any experience with this type of problem?

The only thing I know of is to keep the relative humidity down, around the plants. No standing water. The Serenade and Lilly Miller. You can even use neem oil to treat powdery mildew. Hope ya had a good New Years Eve!

Hi PharmaCan, in my Cervante's book it says to avoid powdery mildew you have to keep it well ventilated, well lit, and keep a low level of humidity. That's what I did with my two and they got it and died anyway. I even Serenaded (and not with my awful voice!) them once a week, but they were too sick. I'm sure you know all of that anyway and have all of those scenerios covered. I thought the way to keep it away was to sulphur bomb, but you already do that. Sorry I am not much help, I would love to see if someone knows the answer. Take care PhamaCan and Happy New Year! :stoned:

Another fine use for prophylactic neem oil treatment! Light mist, allow to dry, repeat a couple times a week, don't overdo it. Works FANTASTIC on rose bushes too. At Walmart and Home dePOT it's a product called 'fungicide 3'= neem.

Weedywildwoman - Happy New Year to you too!!!
Did you get a chance to try the MxB that Ken grew? If not, you should try some of it. Once you taste it, you'll feel differently about putting the effort into growing it. ...or maybe not. LOL I just know I like it.
I hope you have good luck with the plants you just got!

Stinky - Thank you! One of the main problems with anything foliar is that, with a scrog, there's a whole lot of vegetation that is tied down and scrunched together in an unholy mess and there's just no way to coat all the leaves. That's why I'm searching for something either systemic or environmental. (I way over-vegged on my first scrog, so maybe the growth isn't so dense when it's done properly but, still, there's going to be a lot of vegetation tied on top of other vegetation.)
I hope you have a happy and prosperous 2008!!!

Heya PC- hope yer well.
One of the big advantages of a thicker cell wall ( referring to another thread) is resistance to pathogens. The silica will boost yer plants immune system cross the board. Also makes it more difficult for sucking insects to pierce the wall (slowing them down), and for chewers to ,well, chew. Leonardite based silica supps are dirt cheap ( heh heh)- you should give one a shot. Silica Blast and Protekt work really well too.
But really, air flow and humidity are the big factors- Can be a real b*tch in a scrog @ canopy level. Do you have a fan under the screen? Maybe a couple of wall fans just blowing straight up?
Both the Serenade and the sulfur can be used preventatively.

About getting under the canopy, if you want to go hi-tech you can get a fogger to spray an antifungal. It will drift everywhere, even to leaves that have only a tiny bit of air space.

This sounds like just what you need. Found it when looking for the Spray and Grow rhizome recommended.
