I was just wondering if anyone on the boards has grown tobacco plants? I would think the majority of people here would have no interest, but I thought I would ask.
I'm hopfully getting a mortgage and a new house soon so I may try growing some tobacco in the garden just for the sake of it. I'd rather smoke my own than buy it, so why not?
Some general discussion about it would be good.
(Please stear clear if you are just going to hate on tobacco, spare me the lecture :jointsmile:)
I live in a hardcore tobacco-producing area- Connecticut valley shade-grown leaf comes from around here. It grows in rich floodplain soil and the farmers stretch gauze shade-cloth over the crops to keep the leaves from getting scorched and tough. This is premium rolling leaf for the cigar trade. I believe flower spikes have to be removed- that's something you'd want to look up. It's susceptible to mosaic virus. You may not have that problem since you are more than likely growing in a spot where tobacco has never been grown before.
ive never tried to grow tobacco, but that would be fun.
i have an older buddy that family up in kentucky grows tobacco.
theres alot to tobacco from what i understand, and theres alot to know on which leaves you smoke.
i smoke and would think it would be cool to try to grow my own tobacco. i can get little clones of tobbaco plants
i dont know, but may need a license to grow tobacco, because how it is regulated
my great-uncle was a Kentucky tobacco farmer ... be aware, tobacco is poisonous to the soil ... after a couple years of tobacco growing, nothing will grow in that soil, thats why tobacco farmers only plant part of their land, it has to be constantly rotated, even Mother Nature don't like that poisonous shit ... :smokin:

I have been looking into the cultivation of tobacco alittle, doesn't seem like something I couldn't do on a small scale.
texas grass got a good point about the legality of growing it, something i'll look into.
What did he rotate with? Will soybeans grow after tobacco? Or white clover? I'd put in a legume as the rotation, and i think white clover will grow any freaking where! Mmm N-fixing bacteria....
I was just a kid in those days, but I think he was growing alfalfa hay in the rotated fields, I remember him mowing it with a sicle-bar pulled by two mules, one of which was blind, and meaner'n shit :wtf: ... also, when trucking, I saw souvenier Tobacco seeds in a Kentucky gift shop ... they stated in the fine print "illegal to take outside the state of Kentucky", evidently a state law to originally protect their industry ?? ... :jointsmile:Quote:

Beer making for personal use is legal, but sales of your beer must be licensed and taxed. I imagine tobacco is treated similarly. Nicotania sp. are frequently grown as ornamentals.

I think this site says that it's ok if your a "hobby grower", i.e no intention of distribution of your final product.
I may give it a bash if I move, I think that I would section off the part I was growing it in, and sort of make a box in the ground to grow it in soil (I dunno whats that called, lol), so I could change the soil rather than actually fucking up the ground.
