n00b germination question
i am about ready to start my 3rd indoor grow.. i have a pretty decent concept of growing, and have read 1000s of posts on this site over the past year, and every thing else i could come across on the internet regarding growing, but i have just recently started posting on the board.
this is probably a stupid question.. i've always used the moist paper towel in ziplock baggy method for germing. i might try stinkyattic's method, because she really seems to know her stuff. but - i have also heard about soaking the seeds in a cup of water overnight, and some of seeds will sink? are the ones that sink or the ones that float good? if you leave the seeds in the cup water for a couple days will the root come out, like with the paper towel method? is this a bad method to use? thanks for the input, this just seems like a really easy way to do it, but i just got my seeds and i don't want to get off to a bad start.

n00b germination question
When I'm germinating, I like to take my seeds and put them inside a matchbox, put a like-sized emery board inside the box, and shake it for about a minute. This scuffs the outer coating of the shells, and is rumored to make water absorption a little bit easier.
I don't like germinating in water, simply because I am sometimes gone all day at work, and I don't like leaving the roots exposed to water (and no oxygen) for long periods of time. If you're going to use this method, just make sure you're using distilled water in the cup.
I always use the paper towel method, and sow directly into soil as soon as the taproots emerge. I don't like waiting until they're 1/4-1/2" long, or whatever...it's just too risky to disturb the roots when they're that young & that sensitive. I generally have a 90-100% germination rate, by the way.
