Heat effect on yield

Hey all,

Been a lurker here for a few months. Decided to jump right in.

I've completed two grows and had the same problem both times. I'm having low weight in my yields. The bud sizes are large (fist size colas) but they have no weight. Smoke is good however.

Growing in an 6x8 enclosure with a 1000W HPS light on a 4x4 ebb and flow table. Using Floranova grow and bloom with hydroshield and hydrozyme and molasses. I've solved alot of problems encountered during the first grow and have good results cloning, vegging and moving into bloom. But the harvest is where I am failing.

I'm venting the light. But I can't seem to get the ambient temp down lower than 90. Especially now that it is high summer. To keep humidity down I have put a dehumidifier in the enclosure, but it raises the temp past 100. The RH in the enclosure is about 30-40%.

Is the heat what is keeping me from getting full weight?

Oh, btw, the strain I am using is unknown. Part of the comedy of errors that was the first grow.

Well yeah, if you are running temps of 100 you are probably stressing the plants and causing them to yield less. That said, plenty of people have had great grows with a nice yield with high temps - afterall, it was thought for a long time that higher temps = more resin so people ran super high temps and they ended up just fine.

How much are you getting off your 1000 watt lamp? You should be aiming for a pound per 1000 watter.

Also, d\h will raise the temp in your room about 5+ degrees... have you tried only running it during the night cycle? You shouldnt need it when the lights are on as the r\h should drop as the temp increases (to a certain degree) I run 2600 watts and dont need the d\h while the lights are on.

You might want to consider an a\c unit that goes in the window in the room you are growing in. They cost around 60 bucks, but run up the energy bill, in the end you might save money by getting one though. Keep us updated.

I can't believe you have all that pro style equipment and use "unknown seeds." You can't cook a good steak from a bad cut. Start with good genetics and your plants will be a lot more giving. Surf the seeds and strains forum to find a seed bank.

I just use a 250w hps for my cab grow and I never have temp issues. 1000w sounds like it could get hot. An a/c unit would be good and wouldn't really raise humidity.

i agree with all said above! good seeds! i run my grow on a night time photo period as razza suggested, this will bring your temps down with out having to invest in a air con unit. :)

So I do have to fight heat. Going to install an a/c unit before next grow and readjust my timers to take advantage of the cool night air.

In regards to the unknown strain in the grow, that was part of the comedy of errors that was the first grow. One of my partners provided the seeds. The partner said that the seeds were from someone who grows also and had consistent good yields, but couldn't tell me the strain.

To hedge bets a little, I am going to grow two strains this round, this unknown and pearl.

Heat is IMHO your #1 enemy indoors.
Above 95 degrees the plants are not just stressed, but actually being DAMAGED by the heat.
Even at temps lower than the point of damage, yield is going to SUFFER and suffer hard.
Good plan to take advantage of cool night temps. It will reduce your electric bill big time... not to mention that at night electric rates are marginally lower! Bonus!
