Industrial Hemp in the US
Hemphasis.net ~ Alex White Plume
I watched a documentary on PBS last night about this man and his family. He lives on a Native American reservation in the midwest, where unemployment is 85%, substandard housing is 65%, and by a mid 1800's treaty is allowed to farm how he pleases to make a living (forgive me for not remembering specifics).
Alex White Plume and his family could make hundreds of thousands of dollars and thousands of jobs by farming very low THC industrial hemp, and have tried multiple times since the 90's, but the DEA always comes to destroy the crop. They are expected to bring this to Congress this year..
Well, I think it's BS that they are denied the opportunity to make a living. Those native american people were there first, pushed off their land, and now under regulation of the 1970 Controlled Substances Act that unifies marijuana and hemp, making both illegal. (before this it was only marijuana)

I was just about to make a thread about this, as I just saw it on PBS. The name of the documentary is Standing Silent Nation. Here's the official website for it where there is an update on what's happening with him and his family: P.O.V. - Standing Silent Nation | PBS
I was searching through the channels and all of a sudden saw a field of what looked like cannabis. Then I realized it actually was cannabis!
