to start off with, VY Canis Majoris is the largest known star. if you were to replace the sun with this star its outer edge would extend to the orbit of saturn

Would we be able to see the light from earth when this goes into hypernova? Too bad I won't be living.
Most certainly, this is one of the brightest stars in our sky. The earth will be able to see it quite well.
