Problem with Plant size

Well Guys as a newbie to growing I have first time experience of every phase of the growing luckily we have this site with all the helpfull growers, I have something to add which I hope is usefull to other newbies.

Growing with NFT I found that the plant is not very secure in the tank even though I cut my hole in the top around the rockwell cube so it is in tight, but I nearly had it fall over when doing a routine water top up. So I have got some baskets to put the plants in to make them a little firmer sitting in my tank. Here are the pics of what I mean,

As they were too big I cut them down to just over the rock well cube so that I can cover them with Mylar to stop light getting to the roots.

You'd probably get better more knowlegeable answers if you posted this in the growing forum.
