Fred Thompson to Announce White House Candidacy in July
WASHINGTON â?? Former senator and "Law & Order" TV star Fred Thompson will announce his candidacy for president over the July 4 holiday.
According to a report in The Politico, Thompson told a group of financial backers on Tuesday that he is going to run and had already raised millions of dollars. And he is encouraging more support as he readies his campaign in the crowded field of Republican candidates.
Thompson also is expected in early June to form a "testing the waters" committee, which is one type of precursor organization to an official campaign. He is posturing himself as the more conservative alternative to would-be opponents former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Arizona Sen. John McCain, and more steadfast than former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
The Politico reports that a number of staffers to former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush are expected to join Thompson's campaign. And even as an unofficial candidate, Thompson has polled close with Romney. Polls also show that Republicans have not been satisfied with the current field of candidates.

Isn't he sick with cancer? Or is that a non-issue? I could have sworn he was dealing with a serious illness of some sort.

Fred Thompson is on with Sean Hannity right now. He's discussing his lymphoma. It is not among the severe kinds. His doctors tell him it's better to have what he has than to have diabetes.
Thompson received the diagnosis two and half years ago during a check-up. He says he hasn't been sick a day since. He would not have known of the illness but for the check-up.
Thompson says the cancer is in remission. Should that change, there are drugs that can throw it back into remission.
