i just game across a person using thier HPS light hanging down, now i never did think this would be a better way to use your light but now it has me thinking........can you possibly get better light coverage having the light between plant or atleast close to it.
look at this pic.
its nothing more than a 250watt light attached to a cooltube, that is a amazing grow with such a small light.
would do you of this way?

This has worked for me, fluorescents mounted vertically.
First pic is first veg/flower grow (lowryders before that)
Second two are of most recent attemp....Personally I like the vertical lighting, it really seems to increase the fullness throughout the plant.

see that is just amazing for flouros (2nd pic) im almost convinced to switch my bulbs this way for the rest of flower
Those pics were about 10 days ago, they are really starting to swell up now, I'll try to post more pics tommorow, but I am really happy with the results so far....
256 watts of t-8's on the walls with 4 - 43 watt cfl's for added spot lighting.
My only concern would be heat burning leafs....with the t-8's I've had leafs grow right up to and touch the bulbs with no adverse effects, on the other hand the cfl's will crisp the end of the leafs. I would imagine the HPS would have more heat issues.....with the proper space I imagine it would do great.
I always move my lights so the hit from an angle during flower, helped me break the 2oz dried per plant barrier (with only 3 150w hps).
Just FYI,
While flouros can be mounted in any direction relative to gravity, HIDs are designed to be burned either vertically or horizontally, and bulb life can be shortened by switching them.
There are HPS bulbs that I know of that are designed to hang vertically but there MUST be extraction through some kind of cooltube. The plants have full 360degrees coverage from the bulb and not just half you get when hanging horizontally but I'm sure theres some hidden price to pay for growing this way. Also the first pic looks like that because he has trained and topped his plants, there's nothing to say that the results would not have been the same or better if the bulb was horizontal.
The main dif with special vertical bulbs is the glass casing. There designed to eliminate the hot spot directly beneath the bulb when on.
I have a parabolic shade that fitā??s a vertical bulb. :)
When im using the 600w light for seedlings i just attach to 125w envirolights to the shade. :)
I hang my bulbs, but I also put some within. Although I feel i keep them to far away from the crops.
Yeah well, everyone hangs their cfl's vertically, thats nothing new. Hanging a HID vertically is something a bit different.
