i keep hearing people say wait till the plant shows signs it needs to be feed.the problem is i don't know what this signs are and nobody ever seems to say or show what these signs our. does anybody have any pics of a plant that needs to be feed or know what this signs our. thanks
most plants will start to show a nitrogen deficiency wich is yellowing of the lower older leaves on the plant wich is a good indication that you need to start using nutrients starting at a reduced strength.
while there is alot of deficiencys that could occur that is the most common one that tells you when to start feeding you might look at the link below for og faq wich has more on nute deficiencys.

and the other that is common for n00bs to see is a calcium deff, which is seen as a yellowing from the vein out, with rust spots that turn to dead brown patches.

if you have good soil and you are starting from seed... you could start feeding in 3 weeks.. good soil has enough nutrients to last about that long. good luck!
