MH light distance veg question?
Say I have like a million kids and they all want to suck on their mother's tits (400W boobies), how far would you say is "too far" to vegatate em just till flowering (when half the kids become male/die)?
Like how far away from the bulb could you vegatate babies? would 3 feet be way too far away? and with an MH, the light is more intense, the reflector is going to bounce the most light in the center. How much of a difference is light from 2 feet under the bulb compared to 3 feet diangular (from bulb to baby top). I know having a air cooled reflector and all that stuff is great, but say mine doesn't create heat, how far away is too far for babies? Ignore this if I am a fool.
Will they survive if they're 3ft away?

I'm just mumbling on, any help would be nice. I wonder if anyone has tried to grow 10 plants with a 250W hahaha.

if your bulb dosn't create heat you would press the plants against the bulb.
what hurts the plants is the heat, we call it heat stress
it is unlikly that you could give you plants too much light.
the difference between 2 and 3 feet is significant
light intensity decreases at a square. ie double the distance you get 1/4 the light
i'd say a 400w mh would light a 3ftx3ft space alright
it dosn't matter how many plants it's the area. you could fit 30 very small plants and they would do fine under it

i start my young plants at three feet under mh, gradually moving them closer.
in flower, i have plants as close as two inches from the bulb.

I see. I want to veggy em in a bigger area (4X3.5SQFT 400W MH), slash the males and bam (3X3SQFT 400W HPS flower). An extra foot is a helluva lot of light being lost.
How far would you say is "too far" to vegatate em just untill flowering?
Poor lighting could cause them to stretch, grow slower, become weak and die? If it were stretched, the plant wouldn't be as bushy and compact, causing the lower branches to recieve less light. MH is good for making em compact, HPS 3x3SQFT would help, but might cause a little more stretch? Should I flower earlier than usual maybe? Maybe enhance the fan to make the stems stronger / slow down the stretching? Also, absorbing less light means less nute intake too right :x? Curious George is anxious for your almighty wisdom :)!
I bet you if cannabis isn't legal within the next 10 years in the states, all internet cultivation knowledge on the internet won't be availiable, sorry random stoned thought haha. Paranoid ahh, I must learn more before I die!

Use the thermometer god has conviently installed in the back of your hand. If it gets too hot when holding right at top of plant and between light, then too hot for plants. Plus watch them closely when you move light closer. Not hard to tell if they are happy or you are baking to a fucking crisp.
Get a fan blowing upwards between light and tops of plants, can control heat that way, too. Allows light to be closer.

ab, i have lit an entire 4x8 cab with a 400w mh, lights being 26 inches away. it lit my young beanlings, small plants in veg, moms, and cutting, rooted and not all lit by the one 400w, i utilized the fall off by keeping my clones at the farthest reaches, then the moms, then the beanlings, then the veg in the center, directly under the light. this was my favorite setup to date...

For clones, plants I want to stretch (yes, there are times for when stretching is a good thing) and more sensitive plants I keep my 400's about 18" away from the tops and 12-14" for growth and flowering. My 1KW is kept about 3' above the vegging plants and covers about a 4' x 6' area and I do not use 1KW's at all over clones or the more sensitive plants. the 3 400's are in the flower room and cover a swath of about 4' x 10' and will soon be adding one more 400.
