How you find the "Mother" Plant. The simple version
I posted this in answer to another members query, up board, and I thought it might be useful to someone, somewhere.
How to find the Mother Plant
Once you plant is a month old in veg.=6 weeks from seed, approx.
You take a clone. or 2, or 3. :smokin:
Start 3 plants. take 3 clones from each. Veg for 2 weeks after *rooting.
after 2 weeks of veg=4 weeks from cutting... You flower clones.
2 weeks later, approx... Clones show sex. Kill the males. Keep Mothers in perpetual Veg :smokin:
Does that answer your question? Peace
*You must learn to clone successfully. there are numerous threads, and a Growfaq or 2 in the Forums.

Adding to Latewood's instructions...
Finding your FAVORITE mother plant....
Follow his directions, using a whole packet of seeds... take 3 clones from EACH of the 10 resulting plants... sex them... kill the males... save the remaining clones... flower the mothers.
REMEMBER TO LABEL EVERYTHING WELL!!!
Take really good notes on your flowering females. Treat them all IDENTICALLY.
-Exact date on which flowering was induced
-Plant structure- is it hardy? Are the internodes short? Is the stem stout?
-Bud development
-Exact time to harvest
-Harvest weight from each plant
-Cure seperately in individually labelled jars... smoke them... note any variations in flavor or high
-Look over your notes and make a decision as to which mother (s) you want to keep.
- Find the clones from that female and propagate the living crap outta them.
This is especially useful when you are running genetics like Nirvana Standard, where the plants are not necessarily all that uniform in traits, and you are quite likely to end up with a crappy plant or 2, some average ones, and an outstanding female that is worth keeping.

wouldn't it be potentially faster just to keep all your plants in veg and wait for pre-flowering??? no?
i'm starting from 10seeds of northern lights, and going to be creating one mother from that; hopefully i'll get a few females
ps: thanks stinky, i may try that. so as soon as your clones show sex you put them back inder 18hr and they revert to veg?
i'm definitely not waiting for clones to grow up, to flower them and get my first bud. hoping that i might get 3 females from 10seeds and if i did, i'd take the best as mother, the other two and flower them.
but i'm wondering if force-flowering clones is really the fastest way to go?
could i for example: veg the 10seeds (or however many i get to grow of course), and then put them all under 12/12, see what are females, kill the rest, and then keep flowering all the females but the best one, which i'd PUT BACK under 18hr to veg? is that possible?
to start i'll have 170-ish watts of cfl's, and then i'll add a 250w hps once the plants are hearty, still under 18hr, so hopefully they'll grow quick, but i just want to be able to determine sex as fast as possible.
once i've got a mother, and then clones, and others flowering, i'll be using seperate rooms, eventually i'm thinking grow-cabs are in my future
thanks
seeds will arrive any day from docchronic and i'm excited like nobody's biz. also have chilled and become less paranoid :) put a nice new lock on the bedroom door today and i'm getting shit settled.
first grow! exciting!

if you revert to veg...you screw up the plant. told you what to do above

Stinky,
Is the high that different from plant to plant? I don't smoke but I am growing for my sister's medical needs. I got 3 nirvana regular females and I have a definate favorite as far as hardieness and growth patterns. Is the high that different?

Among plants of the same strain it should not be. But Nirvana Standard seeds I have found DO frequently show variability. Every strain from them I have grown out, there IS an above-average mother plant worth keeping, that stands out among her more pedestrian sisters in terms of intensity of the flavors and high. And this from seeds in the same packet.
The little blurb I gave applies most strongly to a potential mother population which is an F2 generation... variation in phenos can be quite great and differences in the high far more noticeable.

It often is when using the hybrids. They're usually sent out 'un-cubed' or not stabilized so the grower gets traits of both plants from the seeds. A way around this is number your plants then take clones keeping them marked with whatever mother plant they came off of. Then when you harvest the moms you'll know which clones, which are still in veg, will be the ones you want to continue working with.
This is why it's important to those who care about what they grow to do business with reputable breeders who have spent the time needed to produce quality strains.

You could wait to see preflowers but either way its just finding out its a girl earlier, same process and results, u just know it female before flowering. Takes alittle of the guess work out.

[align=center]You don't need a big cloning program unless (a) you plan on going commercial, or (b) you have a lot of time, money, and space.
Trust me on this.
That is why I strongly recommend the method described above.
"Nothing personal" against Stinky, but, that is an option;
Not an addition to my advice...IMO
You don't need or want the hassle of all those extra clones,
unless you have a big area and a lot of time and money
to throw after supplies to keep up.
I have about 12 dual airpumps amongst tons of extra equipment,
because I got caught up in "too" big an "OP".
It gets old real fast.
If you are supplying meds for yourself and partner, then topping and rooting>vegging>flowering perpetually 2-3 plants at a time will consistently yield you 1/2lb to 2 lb per month, depending on your space and growing techniques.
Good Luck.Peace lw

LAtewood.... I agree with you 100% actually.
I got caught with my pants down and a plant count of over 200, hunting and hunting for those great genetics....not just the 30 clones it would take to sort through a 10-pack; I was working with like 12 named strains and a couple breeding projects.... so much biomass I had to pay someone to haul it off before I got raided (phew, that never happened, but I was on pins and needles for a couple months).
Will I end up back there again someday? you know me... not unlikely.
Do I have a CRAPLOAD of extra equipment in storage right now? Yup.
But have I streamlined my shit down to acceptable examples of my ~6 favorite strains?
You can bet your sweet patookus I have.
