Despite the sad news that the Marvel comic book character Captain America has apparently been whacked, fans including truthiness slinger and defender of all things American, Stephen Colbert, were up in arms over the news of the beloved superhero??s death.

Tonight on Stephen Colbert's Comedy Central show, "The Colbert Report", Stephen read a letter penned by Marvel Comics editor in chief Joe Quesada, who graciously bequeathed the famous shield of Captain America to the man most deserving to own and protect it.

According to the Comic Book resources site, The shield, "granted to Captain America by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942 is composed of several virtually indestructible--yet classified--metallic alloys.

Though not his first shield, Cap famously used this circular weapon as both a rallying force for U.S. troops, as well as to battle Nazis prior to his disappearance at the end of World War II. Upon his reemergence decades later, the shield followed with him."

More than 60 years after its creation, the shield remains a symbol of American strength and will.

This gift, on the heels of a boutique ice-cream created in his honor, satirist Colbert was visibly verklempt.

The only ones funnier than him are Jon Stewart and Bill Maher (political pundits that is).

To me personally this is more then him being funny. Captain America stood for patriotism, truth, Justice. To just kill him off then pass on this shield(calling card) to a comedian, speaks allot as to how Americans feel about the current state of politics.

If only politicians could act like this and not just political humorist.

Lewis Black skewers America (http://jam.canoe.ca/Television/2007/03/14/3748368.html)

??There??s this whole thing about salary-capping athletes. Can??t you salary-cap CEOs? Who needs $53 million a year? The rich act like they??re crack-addicted whores.?

??Basically, a lot of the people who are in power (in the U.S.) are just so powerful that they don??t really care what anybody says, including myself. People always say to me, ??Do you ever get any backlash from these leaders??? And I go, ??I??m not even on their radar.?? It??s like when Stephen Colbert did the presidential dinner. Those people didn??t even have a concept of who he was. They??re in their own bubble.?
